Book Blurb
Penniless and behind on rent, college student and once famous child actress Ellie Barlow takes on the role of a lifetime when she's hired by a group of young women to break the heart of the campus player who cruelly dumped them. Transformed from slob slacker to jaw-dropping beauty, Ellie is dressed, styled, bleached and waxed, her chunky glasses exchanged for violet contacts. Along with physical prepping, she's coached on Julian's obsessions, which include long-distance running, Doctor Who, and J.D. Salinger.
In no time, Julian is in pursuit of his custom-made next victim, but when Ellie goes off script and begins to fall for her target the newest broken heart in this risky game could be her own.
Goodreads
Ellie Barlow was a child star with millions to her name until her mother stole them all. She is now in Minnesota trying to start a new life. The only thing with a new life is it costs money which she doesn’t have. So when she gets an email for an acting job from Craig’s List, she is very hesitant but she is desperate. She agrees to meet them in a coffee shop.
When she arrives she finds it is a job of revenge. These college girls are planning to get back at the boy who has sex with them and then dumps them. She can’t believe she accepts their offer and when she sees the guy they are after she is shocked. He is the most handsome guy she has ever seen. She doesn’t know if she can do this, but she keeps telling herself he’s a jerk and she needs the money.
As she spends more time with Julian, she realizes that maybe he isn’t as he seems. Something else is going on and she just isn’t sure what. She wants to break the contract with the girls. She worries what will happen. She could be sued. She is also fearful of what will happen when Julian finds out. Unfortunately when the truth comes out, the fall out is beyond anything Ellie thought possible.
I really liked this book. The fact that both characters were broken souls was a selling point for me. One of my favorite storylines is when two tortured souls find each other. This definitely fit in that category.
Julian was a complex person who was dealing with such a tragedy in his past that he suffers from PTSD. The fact that he has been committed previously added to the depth of his character and brokenness.
Ellie had her own issues to deal with. Her mother’s betrayal and then her death really weigh heavily on Ellie’s mind and heart. Separately these two characters are floundering through their lives. However when they find each other, they become stronger. The things that Ellie does for Julian and in pursuit of finding herself were, at times, comical. She was the hero of the story in my opinion. I give it a 4 out of 5.
