Book Blurb
Serena knows a few simple things. She will always be owned by a warlock. She will never have freedom. She will always do what her warlock wishes, regardless of how inane, frivolous, or cruel it is. And if she doesn’t follow the rules, she will be tarnished. Spelled to be bald, inked, and barren for the rest of her life—worth less than the shadow she casts.
Then her ownership is won by a barbarian from another country. With the uncertainty that comes from belonging to a new warlock, Serena questions if being tarnished is really worse than being owned by a barbarian, and tempts fate by breaking the rules. When he looks the other way instead of punishing her, she discovers a new world. The more she ventures into the forbidden, the more she learns of love and a freedom just out of reach. Serena longs for both. But in a society where women are only ever property, hoping for more could be deadly.
Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Serena is at an age to be tested. The amount of magic in her blood will dictate the possibilities of her new owner. Her life she knows as a woman is one of her father’s possessions. She has to follow strict societal rules for women and is severely punished when she does something wrong.
At her testing she learns that she has a large amount of magic in her blood which sets her on a path that her father is ecstatic about. The magic she possesses will promote a great match and give him more power as a congressman.
Serena knows that her life goes from one owner to another. Unfortunately her husband to be is not one she likes. In fact her creeps her out. She is not sure this will be a better situation from what she already has.
However the tournament where she is presented as an intended changes everything. Serena ends up with an unexpected owner, a giant of a man from a barbaric country. Her fear of him is massive. Yet he surprises her with his behavior. She doesn’t know what to believe but she wants more for her life.
This storyline was extremely unique. The world of warlocks and how they treat women was an original spin on the paranormal. It was very different from what I have read before. It was a dark place for woman and the author did a get job of portraying it to the reader. I really liked how the story was told from Serena’s point of view. It was fascinating to watch her react and read what her thoughts were as she moved through situations presented to her.
Watching her flourish under Zade’s kindness and subtle encouragement was a bit rewarding, like watch a wounded bird heal and fly again. I warn it is a barbaric read but a good one. I give it a 4 out of 5.
