Book Blurb
When a gorgeous young dancer walks through his door, a strip club owner must decide whether to follow his rules or his heart in the third novel by the author of One Tiny Lie and Ten Tiny Breaths.
Owning a strip club isn’t the fantasy most guys expect it to be. With long hours, a staff with enough issues to keep a psych ward in business, and the police regularly on his case, twenty-nine-year-old Cain is starting to second guess his unspoken mission to save the women he employs. And then blond, brown-eyed Charlie Rourke walks through his door, and things get really complicated. Cain abides by a strict “no sleeping with the staff” rule. But being around Charlie challenges Cain’s self-control…and it’s been a long time since any woman has done that.
Twenty-two-year-old Charlie Rourke needs a lot of money, really fast, in order to vanish before it’s too late. Taking her clothes off for men makes her stomach curl but Charlie tells herself that at least she’s putting her acting and dancing skills to good use. And though her fellow dancers seem eager to nab their sexy, sophisticated, and genuinely caring boss, she’s not interested. After all, Charlie Rourke doesn’t really exist—and the girl pretending to be her can't get distracted by romance.
Unfortunately, Charlie soon discovers that developing feelings for Cain is inevitable, and that those feelings may not be unrequited—but losing him when he finds out what she’s involved with will be more painful than any other sentence awaiting her.
Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Cain is a man with a past. He was a well known fighter when he was young. His parents were into illegal things that got them killed, along with his little sister when Cain was nineteen. He harbors guilt for not saving his sister.
He has turned that guilt into an obsession trying to help people that would ordinarily fall into the life she was headed for. He now owns and runs a prestigious adult club. Penny’s is named after one of the only women he has had feelings for who died one night in his club.
Charlie walks into Penney’s looking for a job. She is looking to make as much money as she can so she can disappear. Her step-father has her under his thumb and uses her for drug drops. So she is desperate to get the job as a stripper.
Cain instantly is drawn to her. She reminds him of Penny, but he has strict rules about getting involved with any of his dancers. He fights the attraction. Besides she is too good for him. His past and his guilt hold him back.
Charlie is scared and tries to keep her distance. She knows that her step-father, Sam, will kill anyone who gets in the way of his business. So she keeps him a secret and tries to keep both her lives separate.
As time goes on and Charlie gets more comfortable, Sam starts learning about what she is doing. Cain and Ginger both answered Sam’s call for Charlie. She knows that he will threaten them. She will eventually have to leave. When a drop almost turns deadly, Charlie knows she is running out of time.
I really liked this storyline. This author did a great job of developing likable characters that have survived difficult pasts. Cain is the ultimate modern day hero. He turns his life around and tries to help those he employs, but at his own sacrifice. He is tough and fearless, definitely someone you want on your side.
I really liked how Charlie brought him to his knees. That was fun to read. He didn’t really know what to do about her. His inner conflict made the storyline. Charlie’s inner turmoil also added another dynamic. She was a good girl being forced to do something bad, yet she tried to keep everyone else safe.
These two characters were a great pairing even though the life around them swirled with constant dangers. I hope to see more of these characters. I give it a 4 out of 5.
