Book Excerpt

“Look, princess, I don’t have a knight-in-shining-armor side. You need to get around to my real side.”

Caroline’s teeth clicked together at princess; her tongue barely escaped the sharp edges before she forced another breath through her nose.

“And what side would that be? Your, I-want-my-own-island-and-the-rest-of- the-world-can-rot, side? Or how about your, I-need-a-new-woman-every-couple- weeks, side? Which one of those should I appeal to?”

Her voice sounded strange to her ears, thick with frustration and on the brink of screeching. I never raise my voice. Pursing her lips against the tremble, she gripped the edge of her seat, doing her best to ignore his wide smirk. She needed this conversation under her control.

He leaned back and tilted his head to look beneath the table, eyeing her legs. She stiffened but didn’t move further at his perusal of her from head to chest and back. A negotiator couldn’t be easily offended.

“Definitely my I-need-a-new-woman-every-couple-weeks, side. You could be that woman.”

“What?” Incredulity tightened her throat and her words sputtered out in a breathy puff. “Are you insane?”

“Depends on who you ask.” He winked; a suggestive tilt broadened his smile.

No way in hell. She squashed the butterflies that flapped in her belly, determined to ignore the temptation of his sun-kissed shoulders and golden abs, each muscle defined like a sculpted masterpiece. A perfect Hero. Physically. Too bad, of all the Heroes, only he remained.

Caroline cleared her throat. “I’m here to negotiate your chance at freedom, not feed your lascivious appetites.”

“Okay. Tell the AG the offer is rejected.”

“Millions of lives are at risk. We can’t combat a cyborg army under the control of a terrorist on our own.”

“Not my problem.”
“You used to be a hero. Now you’re heartless and cruel—pathetic.”
Caroline searched his face for a reaction, anything to tell her she’d gotten to him. He gave nothing but a shrug under a steady gaze. Her insults seemed to roll right off him.

“Your brethren would be ashamed.”

A flash of violence passed through his eyes as he thrust forward, shoulders raised, in a shift from nonchalant to coiled aggression, ready to strike at the next provocation. Here was the vengeance that cost a dozen citizens their lives and damages in the billions to government assets. She struggled not to react, but anger surged inside her, smothering her self-protective instincts.

Author Interview

Hi Kimberly!

Welcome back to Toot's Book Reviews and thank you so much for sitting down with us for an interview. If you don't mind, I have some questions for you about your new book Hero Worship and your process for our budding authors as well as fans.

So first off, Hero Worship Questions.......

In your own words, what is Hero Worship about?

Hero Worship is about a pissed off superhero who is put in a position to finally seek his vengeance against the last of his enemies but has to decide if it is worth putting the love of his life in danger.

How did you come up with the title of the book and can you tell us its significance?

I honestly don’t know. The title just came to me and worked and I never changed it during revisions.

Is Hero Worship a standalone book or will it be part of a series?

It is a stand alone for now… I feel the pull to go back to superhero land, but I don’t know if it will be within Cole and Caroline’s world or not.

You're previous books were in the Contemporary Romance genre, what made you decide to venture into a new genre?

I have always loved paranormal romance and have been a big sci fi fan for many years. I married my own comic book geek! It was only a matter of time before I wrote a superhero and my other series, Holiday Hearts, which is sweet romance, has paranormal elements. I can’t seem to get away from it completely!

For fans of Sci-Fi romance, What sets Hero Worship apart from others in the genre?

Cole doesn’t just save the damsel in distress. Caroline has her own strengths and he needs her as much as he’s needed. Without her, he wouldn’t have his chance at vengeance or his chance to redeem his name.

What was your favorite scene to write for either your hero or heroine in Hero Worship?

The beginning scene was the most fun. He’s full of himself and she knocks him down a peg or two, enough to get him to take notice and it’s sparks from there.

What was the hardest scene to write?

The action scenes were difficult for me because I wanted them to be exciting and just right.

What's your favorite line or quote from this book?

This one captures his initial response to Caroline’s proposal and was one of the things he said as I was imagining him before I started writing the story.

“Tell you what. I’ll come back and do this job for you.” He cocked his head to the side.

What’s he up to now?

“Then I want you. For two months. On my island. To myself.” He punctuated each word with desire. It flowed through every syllable.

Writing.......

For those visitors to the blog whom didn't see your previous interview with us, we'll ask you about being an author again, if that's ok??

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated and what made you decide to pursue it as a career?

I’ve always made up stories in my head, like my own private movies. I did this a lot as a child and then later it became my form of relaxation. One day, I decided to write some of my current story down~ I don’t really know why. I wanted to know more and I could only keep so much in my head. I was having one of those life moments where you ask yourself just what the hell you want to be and what kind of life do you want to live… And I fantasized that being a romance writer (my fiction of choice) would be like a dream life. It was very romantic. So I took an online class, and was instantly hooked. I had to write a book and then I had to write another that was better than the last. Seven or so later and I finally sold. I wouldn’t go back to thinking being a writer was just a silly fantasy!

What inspires you to put the pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard?

Nothing beats the feeling of a story flowing from your mind to paper. It’s indescribable.

What are some of the elements in/of your writing process?

I usually start with a spark scene- something that’s come to me in the shower, watching tv, listening to radio etc.. and then I latch on a create a little more depth and if I can’t stop thinking about it, I write it down and then ask some hard questions about just what the heck I think is actually going on that could be a story.

Are you a Plotter or a Panster?

I’m 80% pantser. The first 20% is me asking questions like who the characters are, names, where the story is set, what is the theme, the major problems.. Some general direction and then I go from there.

Have you released anything under a different pen name, and if so, is there any difference between them?

Nope~ Just Kimberly Quinton for now. If I do more genre hopping, I might have to add a pen name.

What's next for you?

I’m working on Holiday Hearts 3, Start Spangled Surprise which is going to be different from the first two- longer and with a higher heat rating. Stay Tuned!

Is there anything you’d like to add or say to your fans?

I love this job and I would be so thrilled to hear from anyone who has read Hero Worship or the Holiday Hearts books, Her Wish Before Christmas and Cupid’s Promise.

Personal questions......

Now I know this is like asking you to choose between your own children, but out of all your amazing characters, who is your favorite and why?

Cole’s my favorite.. Who doesn’t love a superhero. But yes, I love all my characters.

Are there any of your stories or characters that hold a special place in your heart?

Connor, my first hero. He will always hold a special place in my heart because he is always going to be the most personal.

If the book had to have a theme song, what would it be?

You have me stumped here. I don’t think I could pick a theme song!

Can you describe for the readers a perfect day or date for your couple from Hero Worship?

They are so in love and discovering themselves and each other- Anything would do! I mean they fell in love while saving the world. A walk on the beach, a movie or dinner at a restaurant would be something so normal and average they’d get a kick out of it. Until Cole’s fans invaded their privacy, that is and then he could fly them off to some place secluded.

Lastly, let's steal an idea from the magazines.....What 5 things do fans not know about you and 5 they don't know about the book?

Know:

I love wine

And chocolate

I have two boys

I almost started a business as a personal chef before I sold my first book.

My favorite shows are Supernatural, Justified and The Walking Dead

Don’t know:

Hmmmm.. I feel like I’ve let it all out on this blog tour

I was on the debate team in high school ~ until I quit because I was accused of improper behavior (which never happened!!!)

I went to college two hours from New Orleans and we had Mardi Gras off as a holiday. The whole weekend before through Fat Tuesday, you could find me in the French Quarter. Until I married a man from there and had to actually live there and work through most of Mardi Gras- which sucked!

I’m extremely sarcastic, but I’m also kind of a hermit, so most people think I’m nicer than I am because they don’t see that side of me often.

I wanted to be sent away to boarding school in High School ~ begged my parents to send me away, anywhere.

I was a drama nerd in high school and almost majored in drama and theater. I loved acting!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for taking time to answer some questions. Congratulations on the new book and I can't wait for everyone to read it!
