Review : Charred Heart (Heart of Fire #1) by Lizzy Ford (PNR)

Book Blurb

For a thousand years, Chace has searched for a way to break the curse placed on him by a jilted lover. He’s a dragon shifter, one who can’t control when the magic will force him into a different form. He’s already lost everyone he ever cared about a few times over and doesn’t know how much longer he’s meant to suffer.

At his wit’s end, he makes a deal with a mysterious figure that offers him what he wants most – an end to his misery – in exchange for everything that’s his: His life, his power. His heart.

The next day, he meets Skylar, a modern day dragon slayer whose mission is to cage him – or kill him. Sexy, witty and brave, she is the yin to his yang, the woman destined to break the curse, balance his magic and make his broken heart whole.

Except it’s too late. Not only has he sealed his fate, but an innocent one-night-stand with Skylar has dragged her into the middle of a deal with the devil, one she won’t escape, if he can’t convince her that dragon shifters aren’t her enemies.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

In book one of Heart of Fire, Chace is a dragon shape shifter. He is a thousand years old and tired of outliving everyone. He is looking to make a deal with Mr. Nobody in order to end his torment. He wants to be human again.

However, shifters are disappearing and he is trying to provide a safe haven for the ones remaining. Unbeknownst to Chace the strange woman who walks into his bar and he later invites into his bed is Skylar. She is a dragon slayer and she was sent to find Chace and bring him in for rehabilitation. After their night together Skylar is still trying to track him.

He, once again, seeks out Mr. Nothing for answers. Mr. Nothing wants him to find out who is taking shifters. He wants Chace to find Skylar using her to find the others.

So he finds himself in the company of Skylar again. Their attraction to each other is intense and he is questioning what Skylar has been taught. Something isn’t right.

Skylar also starts to question everything. She knows something is off, but she is afraid. She refuses to believe that everything she was ever told was a lie.

They both start working to try and find the truth. Unfortunately his bargain with Mr. Nothing gets in the way. Shocking revelations come out and both Chace and Skylar struggle with the truth.

The story was intriguing and you can sympathize with Chace’s pain. It would be difficult to live that long and devastating to watch everyone close to you die. It is understandable why he made the deal in the first place. However, how is it he doesn’t know anything about being a shifter. Mr. Nothing becomes just as bad as the slayers. Chace can’t make informed decisions if he has no clue what it could really mean to be a shifter.

As for the two main characters, I like the chemistry they have together. It is hot and intense. Nothing like fanning yourself as you read.

There were parts of the story where Skylar was extremely stubborn and didn’t want to face the truth. It irritated me that she was supposed to be this strong female dragon slayer and she couldn’t face the possible truths.

The ending was interesting. I can’t wait to see how Chace makes things right in the next book of the series. I give it a 4 out of 5.
