Book Excerpt

Never in her life had she experienced anything like this. Sure, she’d felt instant lust before. If that had been all this was, she could’ve ignored it. She knew how to turn it off. This wasn’t a simple case of horniness. It was more and that scared her.

He parted his mouth slightly and dragged in a deep breath. A shudder wracked his frame. He bent his head so his breath warmed her neck. “Gods, Lena. You tempt me.”

His voice reached inside her and seemed to ignite the fire that had been simmering since she woke. She panted and her rough breath stirred the strands of his hair. The ends brushed her skin and tendrils of awareness whipped through her body to settle low in her belly.

Confusion settled over her, made the needs surging within her worse. She didn’t understand what was wrong with her. She wanted to fuck him, hold him close and run away from him all at the same time. She linked her arms around his neck. “Devin, please. I need,” she groaned, her frustration mounting. “I don’t know what I need.”

“Sssh, baby, I know. I’ll take care of you.”

He nudged at her thighs with a knee. She opened them, allowing him to settle there, the hard ridge pressing into her proof of his desire. Those large hands that had terrified her last night cupped her face. He slowly leaned in and kissed her, gently seeking entrance, not forcing her. The soft brush of his lips over hers focused her wayward emotions and settled the crazy urges. The worry over why she hovered on the verge of combusting faded in the face of his attentions. She moaned and he slid inside, claiming her mouth as his with deep sweeping thrusts of his tongue.

While she enjoyed men, none of her lovers ever kissed like this one. Devin explored and licked the recesses of her mouth. Their tongues stroked and he guided her into a dance that felt as intimate as sex. She hesitantly reached up and touched the strong line of his jaw. No stubble roughened it, just the hot skin of a powerful man. Needing more, she caressed his cheek, memorizing the smooth contours.

She slid her fingers to the column of his neck. His pulse beat steadily under her fingertips. A low growl crawled up his throat. The vibrations from that primal sound resonated against her palm, its echo seeming to skip through her veins. Her heartbeat took on an erratic rhythm. Tremors wracked her limbs, an emotion settling over her she couldn’t explain. It left her wary. The desire she understood, even welcomed. It was the longing to hear that rumbly sound in her ear every day she didn’t like.

The worry came back, stronger than before. Devin was conditioning her, making her need him. That was the only explanation for why she couldn’t resist him. She did not need a man and she especially did not need a shifter. With every passing moment, however, he seemed to slip further into her mind, pushing all the important stuff out.

She broke the kissed and shoved at his shoulders. “This isn’t what I need.”

He smiled, the tips of fangs glinting in the soft spill of sunshine across the bed. “Wanna bet?”

Author Interview

Hi Nancy,

Thank you so much for sitting down with Toot's for an interview. If you don't mind, I have some questions for you about your series Royal Pride, your new book, Beautiful Mistake, and your process for our budding authors as well as fans.

So first off, Your newest book is part of your series, Royal Pride. Let's talk about the series as a whole....

In your own words, what is the Royal Pride series about?

This series is about finding enduring love in a world where the antiquated customs of shifter culture collide with modern human norms. Danger abounds in the form of shifter trafficking, experimentation and corruption. However, the biggest threat is the decision each hero/heroine must make when it comes to declaring their love. They must decide if what they feel is strong enough to risk everything, including their human partner’s life and soul, to spend eternity together.

How did you come up with the idea, title of the series and of the current book, Beautiful Mistake?

The Royal Pride series was a mix of my imagination and two paranormal series which I absolutely love—Gena Showalter’s Lord of the Underworld series and Laurann Dohner’s New Species. The Royals were named as such because they are the direct descendants of the gods and are the elite among the shifters. The term Pride came from the main family featured in this series, a feline pride. Beautiful Mistake is the theme of Devin and Lena’s book. Their love is riddled with mistakes, but the beautiful aspect stems from their realization that only they can heal each other. Neither the hero and heroine in this story are perfect, but they are exactly what the other needs. And isn’t that the best kind of forever love?

Can you tell us a bit about the newest book in the series, Beautiful Mistake?

This story centers on saving the twin of a lion shifter cub that is introduced in book 1. Both little girls were experimented on and Devin vows to save Molly, the missing twin, before she’s sold to another pride. Devin, however, has been tortured himself and because of what he’s endured, his mind is broken. He suffers from blackouts and must constantly keep his unstable cats under control. Lena is his sanity (his one) but she’s been hurt emotionally by shifters before. She doesn’t trust her feelings, but she can’t help falling in love with Devin. The only problem—loving him will destroy her if she can’t admit to her feelings.

How does the new book, Beautiful Mistake, fit into the series?

This is book two and picks up a couple of months after book 1. Although book 2 can be read alone, this is a true series where the story arc spans each hero/heroine’s journey.

How many books are planned for the series?

I don’t have a set number of books planned. Book 3 will be releasing soon and there will be more to come.

What was your favorite scene to write for your hero or heroine in Beautiful Mistake?

My favorite scene was when Devin rescues Molly. It was sad and beautiful.

What was the hardest scene to write for Beautiful Mistake?

The final scene between Lena and Molly. I needed tissues.

What is your favorite line or quote from Beautiful Mistake?

If it was possible to see heaven during an orgasm, she was pretty sure she had and it looked a hell of a lot like a pair of kaleidoscope-colored eyes.

Writing.......

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated and what made you decide to pursue it as a career?

I’ve always loved reading but never considered writing until I read a book from my favorite author and mentioned to my friend that I wanted to try to write something like it. She laughed at me and told me I couldn’t do it. ‘You’re a geek. Geeks don’t write.’ (I’m a chemist, btw.) So I had to prove her wrong.

What inspires you to put the pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard?

The characters living in my head are demanding! They won’t let me rest until I do. Deadlines help too-lol.

What are some of the elements in/of your writing process?

I usually reread the scene I last wrote before typing a single word. I need to ground myself in the story so I know where I’m going.

Are you a Plotter or a Panster?

I used to be a Panster. Now, I’m a plotter, loosely at least. I need a start, middle and ending. I usually plot ahead and jot down my ideas as they come.

Have you released anything under a different pen name, and if so, is there any difference between them?

Nope. I write under my real name.

What's next for you?

Book 3 of the Royal Pride series, Favorite Obsession, will be releasing soon. There will be more Royal Pride books, but I’m working on a new series, the Wild Hunt, for Ellora’s Cave. This too will be an erotic paranormal and it will release late summer/early fall.

Is there anything you’d like to add or say to your fans?

I’d like to thank everyone who’s read my books and given me positive feedback. For someone who still worries that geeks can’t write romance, especially erotic, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. You’re the best!

Personal questions......

Now I know this is like asking you to choose between your own children, but out of all your amazing characters, who is your favorite and why?

Josh from Favorite Obsession (Royal Pride, 3). He’s a human tangling with shifters and loves a woman he can never have.

Are there any of your stories or characters that hold a special place in your heart?

Devin and Lena’s story is one full of love and mistakes. While their issues aren’t ones most people have, I adore their flawed personas and struggles. Few people have perfect relationships, but it’s the willingness to make it work that makes a love truly special.

If the book or series had to have a theme song, what would it be?

Heaven by Otherwise.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, can you describe for the readers a perfect date for your couple from Beautiful Mistake?

Both Devin and Lena love to be outdoors. Their perfect date would be a picnic in the woods. They’d spend the day making love and eating…well, Devin would. He loves to eat-lol.

Lastly, let's steal an idea from the magazines.....What 5 things do fans not know about you and 5 they don't know about the book?

Things fans don’t know about me…

1. I’m afraid of ladybugs.

2. I have seven tattoos (and I can’t wait to get more!)

3. I was in a serious car accident at 16 (snowy roads)

4. My favorite amusement park ride is the teacups.

5. Green M&M’s are my favorite.

Things fans don’t know about Beautiful Mistake?

1. Aromatherapy can heal a shifter.

2. Devotion can mend old wounds.

3. The best support is often a shoulder to cry on.

4. A new secondary character was named after my favorite villain/hero.

5. True love is forever.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for taking time to answer some questions. Congratulations on the new book and I can't wait for everyone to read it

I've always been an avid reader and encourage everyone to escape the hectic daily grind with a few minutes a day in your favorite book.

I'm lucky enough to share my cat's home with my three wonderful children, husband, dog and snake. When not writing, I work as a chemist in a pharmaceutical lab.

My passions beyond reading and family include music, classic cars, tattoos and animals (all of which have found their way into my writing in one form or another).
