Book Excerpt

“You’re firing me because I didn’t sell enough chocolate?” Lena had never been fired before. She shouldn’t be so pissed. It wasn’t like she had wanted to be a clerk in the first place.

“No. I’m letting you know your obligation to your friend is fulfilled. We have a manager who can take over—one who’s interested in the bottom line and ready to do what it takes to make this store a success—therefore, you no longer need to inconvenience yourself with filling in.” If he could have been more condescending, she wasn’t sure how.

“But who will coordinate the seminars and special guests we have coming in next week? Julie can’t run the store and do that, too.” Why was she arguing? If the part owner said he didn’t need her, then he didn’t need her. She could get to her planned reunion with James.

“I’ll be coordinating the week of activities and specials. Like I said, everything is under control and you are free to go.” He began the closing routine as if there was no need for further discussion. She was, for the first time she could remember, speechless.

Lena paced through the shop to the florist counter where her purse was secured in a cabinet. Pulling the over-sized boho bag out, she bit her tongue before saying anything else. She had known her time there was temporary while they found other staff, but she had enjoyed the work and done well, despite what Marcus thought. Maybe she should take his dismissal as a sign to move on.

Turning, she almost swallowed her sore tongue. Holy heck. Boss from hell had loosened his tie and unbuttoned his collar. Suddenly Mr. Tight Ass looked more bedroom than boardroom. He ran a hand over his face, pinched the bridge of his nose for a breath, then smoothed through his just-longer-than-short locks. The natural wave kept the tousled-yet-put-together style with ease. Transfixed, she couldn’t look away as his long fingers deftly and purposefully unbuttoned one sleeve and then the other before rolling them up to reveal the sun-kissed color of his hands also extended up strong forearms. Her lips closed around the soft pant of her breath. Her thoughts really needed to start flowing in a different direction.

His gaze caught hers and heat singed her cheeks at his cocky half-grin. “You don’t need to help close up. I can manage.”

Clearing her throat, she wiped at the handprint her heated skin had left on the glass counter. “Sure thing.” I need to get out of here before I do something stupid.

Lena wrestled one arm into her coat. Her palms itched to either smack him or caress him to see what he would do. Neither choice was in her best interest. He moved behind her to hold up her coat. His hand brushed her shoulder, turning her toward him. The small touch sent a thrill straight to her core. Peeking up at him, she searched for an answering attraction in the depths of his warm autumn flecked-green eyes but he moved away quickly. “Night, then. Good luck.” And once again, she’d been dismissed.

Stupid candy. From this night on, she never wanted to see chocolate again. Okay, maybe not until after Valentine’s.

Author Interview

Hi Kimberly,

Thank you so much for sitting down with Toot's for an interview. If you don't mind, I have some questions for you about your series Holiday Hearts, your new book, Cupid’s Promise, and your process for our budding authors as well as fans.

So first off, Your newest book is part of your series, Holiday Hearts. Let's talk about the series as a whole....

In your own words, what is the Holiday Hearts series about?

You can’t fight destiny. And if you add in a ghost grandmother determined to see her girls find their true love, you really can’t fight it.

How did you come up with the idea, title of the series and of the current book, Cupid’s Promise?

I’m a sucker for sweet holiday romances and I started writing Her Wish Before Christmas as a holiday novella. But Genny’s sister and cousins kept stealing the spotlight so I decided to give each one their own holiday. Cupid’s Promise came up during a brainstorming session and It really fit.

Can you tell us a bit about the newest book in the series, Cupid’s Promise?

Lena Ridgeway has just moved back to Laurel Cove to give herself some time to re-evaluate where her life is going. She was a successful model but recently gave up that career and is kind of floundering. When her best friend and owner of Cupid’s Secret is injured, Lena steps up to help run the store since she was working on the opening events anyway. She didn’t expect to be so interested in the usually hands-off co-owner, Marcus.

How does the new book, Cupid’s Promise, fit into the series?

Over the series, readers will see each of the granddaughters find their true love, who is the one to open their necklace and fulfill the love fortune their grandmother gave them on their eighteenth birthday. Lena was one who was the most open to it and ready. Even going so far as to think she should take the necklace to her ex to see if he was the one. Thankfully she changed her mind.

How many books are planned for the series?

Right now, this is a four book series. I just finished the draft of #3, Star Spangled Surprise.

What was your favorite scene to write for your hero or heroine in Cupid’s Promise?

The couples therapy workshop was my favorite. I love to make myself laugh or feel the sexual frustration of my characters. If I feel it, I think I have a better chance of making a reader feel it too.

What was the hardest scene to write for Cupid’s Promise?

The endings are the hardest for me. I want the reader to have a good emotional pay-off.

What is your favorite line or quote from Cupid’s Promise?

This is from the cooking demonstration scene.

So wrapped up in the intimacy of his whisper, it took her a second to catch his meaning. “Oh, I think a man would appreciate a slow seductive dinner with a woman, especially one who thought of ways to pleasure her man the whole time she spent preparing said meal.” She pitched her voice to match his flirty one.

His eyes narrowed, but desire flared in them before his impeccable control took over. Aha. He’s not completely immune to the idea of being seduced with food. Yeah, Marcus didn’t need it, but I bet he wouldn’t turn it down either.

Writing.......

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated and what made you decide to pursue it as a career?

I didn’t think of writing as a career until years after I started. I started writing my first story because I was stressed out by my job at the time and needed an outlet. I have always had running stories or fantasies in my head. From as far back as I can remember, I was a daydreamer. But one day, I decided to write one of my stories down. I kept it secret because it was just for me. After quitting work to be a stay at home mom, I would pull “my book” out every now and then to work on it. Sometime between child one and child two I decided to actually pursue writing with a seriousness that turned it from something secret to something I actively worked on. It took a number of years after that to actually have something worth submitting, but I just kept at it with a sense of “I can do this and I will get there one day.” And now my boys are in school and I write full-time.

What inspires you to put the pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard?

There is absolutely nothing like the feeling of creating a story from beginning to end. Especially when you’ve gotten into the groove and the words are flowing. It’s a high that is probably like the high people get from exercising. (I don’t get that!)

What are some of the elements in/of your writing process?

I write a lot of notes- scratch pad notes and free-writing to brainstorm. I drink way too much coffee and listen to soothing music. And I’ve perfected the art of staring at the walls of office.

Are you a Plotter or a Panster?

I’m a pantser who does a lot of free-writing. I don’t write out a formal plot but I do answer some questions just to keep me on the right path. And then I just write.

Have you released anything under a different pen name, and if so, is there any difference between them?

Nope.

What's next for you?

I have a sexy superhero romance releasing this month from Decadent- Hero Worship. This one is not sweet! I’m really excited because I am a sci-fi geek along with a romance junkie.

Is there anything you’d like to add or say to your fans?

That I blush and giggle at the idea of having fans!?! I love to chat on facebook or twitter- so find me and let’s talk books or hot guys or movies.. And if it’s late, I’ve probably had a glass of wine or two- fair warning about that!

Personal questions......

Now I know this is like asking you to choose between your own children, but out of all your amazing characters, who is your favorite and why?

The one I’m writing right now is one of my favorites. I think it’s like I’m falling in love with my characters as I write them so every book gives me a new favorite.

Are there any of your stories or characters that hold a special place in your heart?

Her Wish Before Christmas will always hold a special place because it was one of the first stories that really flowed out of me and it’s also the first to sell and be published.

If the book or series had to have a theme song, what would it be?

Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, can you describe for the readers a perfect date for your couple from Cupid's Promise?

They’re in love and can’t keep their hands off each other. They’d both try to plan something special for the other. Marcus would sweep her away for a weekend away somewhere secluded and Lena would plan something that might make Marcus sweat just to shake up some of his reserve.

Lastly, let's steal an idea from the magazines.....What 5 things do fans not know about you and 5 they don't know about the book?

Not know about me?
Hmmm… I love musicals. I have a daredevil side that I don’t get the chance to indulge these days. If I’m staring at you it’s probably because I’m working on some elaborate fantasy with a fictional you—sorry, but it’s the truth. I’m either killing you or wondering what you would do if X happened. Once upon a time I was in school to become a forensic anthropologist and I could identify all the bones of a skeleton, sex and age it. Not anymore… Sadly. I would love to take more classes, if they didn’t come with grades. I love attending lectures, I just don’t want to do homework that isn’t reading.

About the book?
No secrets yet, but ask me again when the 4th book is out…

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for taking time to answer some questions. Congratulations on the new book and I can't wait for everyone to read it!

It was my pleasure! Thank you for hosting me today.
