Review : Witch Hunt by S.M. Reine (UF)

Book Blurb

A brutal murder.

There are scratches on Cèsar Hawke’s arms, a discharged Glock on his coffee table, and a dead woman in his bathtub. Yeah, maybe he brought the waitress home for some fun — he was too drunk to remember it — but he knows for a fact that he didn’t kill her. He’s an agent with the Office of Preternatural Affairs. He doesn’t hurt people. He saves them.

The cops disagree. Now Cèsar is running.

The search for a shaman.

Isobel Stonecrow speaks with the dead…for the right price. She brings closure to the bereaved and heals broken hearts. But when she resurrects someone for the wrong client, she ends up on the OPA’s most wanted list.

One risky solution.

Tracking down Isobel is the last case assigned to Cèsar before he bolts. If he finds her, he can prove that he didn’t kill that waitress. He can clear his name, get his job back, and bring justice to the victim.

She’s just one witch. Cèsar has bagged a dozen witches before.

How hard can one more be?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Cesar Hawke is a witch that works for the Office of Preternatural Affairs, a secret division of the government. He and his partner are celebrating with the rest of the gang over his last capture. He usually doesn’t drink but it’s a celebration so he indulges a bit.

When he wakes up in his apartment afterwards, he finds a murdered woman in his bathtub. It was the waitress he has been flirting with from the bar. He has no clue what happened, but he knows he didn’t kill her. Yet he ends up being arrested by the LAPD and carted off to the police station for an interrogation. The OPA aren’t going to step in since it doesn’t appear magic was involved in the murder. So they are letting him take his chances in human court.

Cesar refuses to wait it out. He is innocent and the only one to prove it seems to be him. He escapes and starts on a trail for the truth. He wants to find a woman who can speak to the dead. She was his next assignment. So Cesar figures Isobel is his best bet in finding out what really happened. She can talk to Erin and find out who killed her. The race is on to find out the truth and Cesar gets to the point where he doesn’t know who to trust. His boss and even his partner are under suspicion.

This book was filled with action. The chase and excitement that followed Cesar and Isobel was the best part of the book. It kept the story going and added a lot of life threatening situations. However it wasn’t as good as I was hoping. I have read this author before and really liked the books. So I was excited to read this one.

Cesar was a great character and he is dealt a raw deal at first. However as things were unfolding it got confusing. I had a hard time in some parts of the story keeping straight who was doing what. It bounced around from one character to another. I also didn’t like how it ended. I felt Cesar was cheated in some way. I give it a 3 out of 5.
