Book Blurb
"She knew. That’s why Mom hadn’t opened the door. She knew he was dead."
Twenty years as an army brat and Ember Howard knew, too. The soldiers at the door meant her dad was never coming home. What she didn’t know was how she would find the strength to singlehandedly care for her crumbling family when her mom falls apart.
Then Josh Walker enters her life. Hockey star, her new next-door neighbor, and not to mention the most delicious hands that insist on saving her over and over again. He has a way of erasing the pain with a single look, a single touch. As much as she wants to turn off her feelings and endure the heartache on her own, she can’t deny their intense attraction.
Until Josh’s secret shatters their world. And Ember must decide if he’s worth the risk that comes with loving a man who could strip her bare.
Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
December ‘Ember’ Howard is home for the holidays. She traveled from Boulder to Colorado Springs for the extent of her Christmas vacation from school. It is also her twentieth birthday and she is expecting a message from her father. Her father is a doctor in the Army and he is currently on tour in Afghanistan. Knocks on the front door interrupt her thoughts and so does her little brother when he bursts into her room. When the knocks come again, Ember goes down to find out why her mother hasn’t answered the door. Her mom is sitting on the stairs and refuses to move. Ember opens the door to find an Army Captain and Lieutenant there bringing bad news. Her father had been killed that morning. Ember’s world completely falls apart from that moment on.
Josh Walker is a classmate of Ember’s. He remembers her even though he was three years older. He is currently going to college in Colorado Springs and coaches her little brother’s hockey team. He encounters her in the grocery store when she is buying a birthday cake for herself after she learned of her father’s death. She is so devastated and he helps her. In fact he offers to be her whatever. He will be whatever she needs.
Ember is shocked to find Josh in her life. She had the hugest crush on him when she was a freshman in high school. She used to drool over him and fantasize about him. However, he becomes her escape from the sadness in her life. He fills the roll of the rock she needs to get through the most difficult time in her life.
This book was intense. The grief and loss were well written. If a story makes me cry than it is written well. I could feel her pain and confusion. The reader lives through every emotion and obstacle that Ember has to face.
December and Josh were a great couple. They worked well and I liked his determination to take care of her. Ember’s fear was a bit irrational when it came to Josh and that seemed a bit over the top, but understandable. I would have figured the time is precious would have been prevalent in her thoughts instead. It was a great book and I give it a 5 out of 5 for its emotional adventure.
