Book Blurb & Info

Julie Marone isn’t your ordinary matchmaker. Instead of setting up singles, she matches already-happy couples with their dream homes. It’s her calling. Her gift. And since she lost the other half of her own happy couple, it’s become her passion.

Cody Brown isn’t your ordinary cowboy. Instead of roping runaway steers, he wrangles sick kids and strung-out junkies as an ER doc. It’s his job. His responsibility. And since his brother lost his wife to a drunk driver, it’s his mission.

When Cody moves from Austin to Boston, he wants Julie to find him a condo, and fast. But she’s got issues with that. Because not only is Cody single, he’s a doctor to boot, and ever since her fiancé died, she’s got a major grudge against doctors.

Cody charms her into breaking her “couples-only” rule, but when he angles to be her date for her sister’s Christmas Eve wedding, he finds out Julie’s “no-doctor” rule is unbending. Still, he’s not quitting, because as hard as Julie fights it, there’s heat between them. If Cody has his way, they’ll be a couple by Christmas, and the next dream house Julie finds will be their own.

Excerpt

The chandeliers sparked off the red in her hair. Her crossed leg swung like a black leather metronome. Strolling up to her, he stopped a little too close to her chair. Call him a caveman, but he liked it when she looked up at him.

She said a quick goodbye and shut off her phone.

“Trouble?” he asked.

She stood up, swinging her purse so it slapped him in the nuts. A brush-back, not an accident.

“Just my nosy, interfering sister grilling me about my date.” She headed for the door at the same half-run she’d used to get out of the weather. It occurred to him that it was her customary speed.

He lagged behind. After twelve straight in the ER, he wasn’t moving at anybody’s pace but his own.

“She the one who set you up?” he said.

She stopped to wait for him, just aggravated enough to talk about it. “Why does she care if I have a date for her wedding? She’s the only one who needs a date!”

She started for the door again. He lagged behind. She stopped, in a huff. “Are you injured or something? Did you sprain an ankle running in those boots?”

He pulled up alongside her. “I didn’t know we were in a race. But remember, the tortoise beats the hare.”

Author Interview

Hi Cara,

Thank you so much for sitting down with Toot's for an interview. If you don't mind, I have some questions for you about your new Save the Date series and your process for our budding authors as well as fans, which I am definitely among!

So first off, your newest book is part of the new Save the Date Series. Let's talk about the series as a whole.

In your own words, what is the Save the Date Series about?

Thanks for having me on the blog today! First of all, the Save the Date series is NOT about the bride and groom. It’s about the guests, or rather certain guests, and the unexpected, often comical and always romantic consequences of being involved in a wedding.

For instance, The Wedding Favor, due out in January, is about a bridesmaid and groomsman who can’t stand each other, but as a favor to the bride and groom they pretend to get along during the four-day wedding weekend, leading first to mayhem and ultimately to true love.

Can you tell us about your newest book in the series, The Wedding Date: A Christmas Novella?

In The Wedding Date, Julie is a realtor who specializes in matching couples with their happy homes. Her sister is getting married on Christmas Eve, and after three lousy blind dates, Julie still needs to find a wedding date. Cody is an ER doc who’s just moved from Austin to Boston. He swaggers into her office and sweet-talks her into breaking her couples-only rule and helping him find a place to live. She’s attracted to him, but ever since her fiancé died, she also has a no-doctor rule. Can Cody convince her to break that rule too and make him her wedding date?

How does the new book, The Wedding Date: A Christmas Novella, fit into the series?

Cody is the brother of Tyrell, the hero of The Wedding Favor.

How many books are planned for the series?

Two novellas – The Wedding Date: A Christmas Novella, and The Wedding Gift. And three novels – The Wedding Favor, The Wedding Vow, and The Wedding Band

What was your favorite scene to write for your hero or heroine in The Wedding Date: A Christmas Novella?

The scene where Julie is trying to extract herself from her third lousy blind date, who isn’t getting the hint, and Cody comes along and ends up helping her in an unexpected way.

What was the hardest scene to write for The Wedding Date: A Christmas Novella?

The scene where Julie explains to Cody why she hates doctors, which involves telling him about her fiancé’s illness.

Writing.......

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated and what made you decide to pursue it as a career?

I’ve been an avid reader from a young age, and I always knew in the back of my mind that I’d try my own hand at it one day. There were a few false starts, but when I wrote The Wedding Favor, I knew I had something, and fortunately my editor agreed!

What are some of the elements in/of your writing process?

I’m what’s called a pantser, which means I mostly write by the seat of my pants, without a detailed outline. A story is born when a character comes to me and I just sit down and start writing about him or her. Then along comes the other half of the couple, and the trouble begins! The problem with being a pantser is that it takes a while for the shape of the story to reveal itself, which requires going back to cut out or rework a lot of the early material. That is seriously time-consuming. With each book, I’m doing a little more outlining, hoping to streamline the process. But there will always be plenty of room for unexpected characters and plot twists to pop up.

What's next for you?

I’m hard at work on the third novel in the Save the Date series – The Wedding Band – and starting to jot down ideas for the next series -- very sketchy so far!

Personal questions......

Now I know this is like asking you to choose between your own children, but out of all your amazing stories, who is your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is Tyrell Brown, the hero of The Wedding Favor. He’s a sexy cowboy who happens to have a PhD in philosophy and a wicked sense of humor. He lost his wife to a car accident seven years before the story begins, and he’s sure that the last person he’d ever fall for is the lawyer on the other side of his wrongful death case.

If you had to pick an actor to portray your fav, whom would it be?

Robert Redford, back when he played the Sundance Kid. He’s Tyrell right down to the ground. SEXY!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for taking time to answer some questions. Congratulations on the new book and I can't wait for everyone to read it!

Thanks for having me and asking such great questions. This was fun!
