Q Excerpt

 Q moved suddenly, pushing off from the cage and striding toward the entrance of the aviary. He unlocked the deadbolt and entered the space. Birds chirped louder as Q stood in the centre of their world. He looked like a man robbed of his own wings. A fallen angel that had no place on earth and fought a daily battle to fit in.
I stepped forward. Should I say something? Comfort him? My heart twisted, needing to be there for him, but no longer able to. No matter how many kind words I spoke, Q would see I no longer lived inside.
My soul jangled with chains and locks, saving me but also ruining me. The longer I lived in my tower the more passion and connection faded.
I hated the numbing virus inside, spreading slowly, deleting all memory of who Tess had been. I was replaced with a carbon replica who would float away in the wind, robbed of her convictions and thoughts. All because I wasn’t strong enough to face what I’d done.
Q cursed under his breath, his chest pumping with emotion. “Why should I keep you when you don’t want to be here? You’re not here for me. You’re here because I lock you up. You’re my prisoners, my captives, my trophies.”
He hung his head before waving his arms.
“Allez vous-en. Je ne veux plus de vous. Elle ne veut plus de plus alors ça sert à quoi, putain?”
Fly away. I no longer want you. She no longer wants me, so what's the fucking point?
The birds went crazy, darting left and right, spying freedom through the open door. They exploded through the exit and into the conservatory, weaving through plants and water features.
Wings rustled as I ducked from a small flock of robins.
“Get out!” Q yelled; the birds flurried harder. “Get far away from me.”
I stepped backward, not wanting to see Q breakdown. I wanted it to hurt—to kill me with knowledge that I’d ripped out his heart—but all I felt was emptiness.
Q looked up and froze.
His eyes locked on mine, shining with rage and blackness. I prayed for some awakening, so I could put both of us out of our misery. I wanted to bring forth all my love for him and keep hiding from my guilt. I wanted to erase the darkness, the lostness and hate from his eyes, but I was useless.
Bowing my head, I dropped my gaze.
Q cursed, exiting the aviary, humming with anger and rage. He stalked toward me, stopping so close his body heat seared my skin.
I flinched, expecting him to lash out—to grab my hair, slap me—something to wake me up.
When he didn’t touch me, I looked up. Q murmured, “So low you must think of me.”
He captured a curl, running it gently through his fingertips. “Fly away, esclave, if that is what you want. I won’t stop you.” His tone was bleak and derelict.

Toot's Review

Quintessentially Q is the next book in Pepper Winter's Monster In The Dark series. Unlike the first book, Tears of Tess, Q switches POV between the two main characters, Tess and Q, which is wonderful because Q is deliciously devilish and a total monster in human clothes albeit a monster with morals but still. Pepper has created a wonderful character in Q and if he wasn't 100% human, I'd almost label this story with a PNR twist. Pepper really dives into Q's psyche and shows us just how dark someone can go but has the restraint to not act on it. Q knows he has monstrous desires and needs Tess to balance him out. In the first book, the story ended on a high note with a perceived HEA but what Quintessentially Q shows us is that even though the characters think they are on track for their HEA, sometime the best laid plans go terribly array. So let me give you a brief synopsis without spoiling too much!

Tess and Q have it all figured out. They are ready for their HEA. Tess has agreed to stick it out and Q has given himself over to her but now what???? Both are willing to work on a relationship but this is totally new to both of them and of course, they totally screw it up right away by trying too hard. Q has decided to lock his monster away and try to be the perfect man and Tess has had just about enough of it. Q has also promised to go after the human traffickers that originally sold Tess but he hasn't done that either. So as the two try to figure out a new life together, people behind the scenes have conspired to tear them apart. The human traffickers decide that Q hasn't done right by his slave and make a move to kidnap her back and in doing so, force Tess and Q to live out their worst nightmare. THEY BREAK HER! To save Tess, Q must embrace his monster and lay waste to the world but in doing so, he might have lost her forever.

I honestly, didn't think a dark erotic story could get much darker then Tears of Tess but boy was I wrong! Quintessentially Q is so much darker and just like Tears of Tess, I'll say the same thing, there is so much wrong with this romance that you can't believe you're actually reading it but then again the payoff is so wonderful that you end up cheering for them. There's BDSM, slavery, rape, drugs, and so much more that I honestly can say, I love this book but it has left me speechless. I knew I need to review it for this blog tour but I couldn't string together any coherent thoughts that made sense. I wanted to ramble on about how perfect the two characters are for each other, how not all HEA start out that way, how human trafficking sucks and I'm glad Q went postal on them, how I love alpha males and the women who love them but as you can tell, it jacked a bit with my mind. I even turned for support on Facebook from some of my friends and posted this "Gotta finish writing a book review for a book I loved but it's so dark and twisted that I just have no words. I've sat on it for weeks now, trying to get my thoughts together and I just can't. Uggggggg and it's due tomorrow. Any advice from my bookie buddies?" And guess what the consensus was "That's your review.....It's so dark and twisted it will leave you speachless" - RTC. But I'll add it was with major love!!!

For a dark, dark, dark erotica, I'm giving it 5 stars!!!
