Review : Legend of the Highland Dragon by Isabel Cooper (HR/PNR)

Book Blurb

The MacAlasdairs are not like other men.

Descendants of an ancient alliance, they live for centuries, shifting between human and dragon forms. Some wander the earth; some keep to their lands in Scotland. And Stephen MacAlasdair, the newest lord of the family, must go to London to settle his father’s business affairs. He brings an object of great power and greater darkness. He finds an enemy from his past, whose wrath is still living and deadly. And he meets an ally he’d never have expected.

1894 London, doesn't provide an easy life for women of the lower class, but Mina Seymour has managed to work herself up to a position as the secretary of a famous scholar. When a tall, dark Scottish stranger demands to see her employer, Mina is irritated; when MacAlasdair's departure leaves the professor worried, she’s suspicious. Determined to figure out the situation, she investigates further - and finds a world and a man she could never have imagined.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Mina Seymour is a secretary for Professor Richard Carter. She has worked hard to get to the position she has from where she started. Professor Carter took a chance on her and she is eternally grateful. When a man with a Scottish accent enters the office demanding an audience with Professor Carter, Mina has no idea how her life is about to change.

Laird Stephen MacAlasdair has a secret that he guards about himself and it seems that someone from his past has come back to cause trouble. Professor Carter is one of the men who know the problematic gentleman and Stephen worries for his safety. The third man from the past expedition that brought them all together was found murdered. So when he pays Professor Carter a visit to chat about recent events, he is surprised to see who he meets at the door. She is an admirable guard.

Mina is curious about Laird MacAlasdair and worried about the Professor Carter’s health and safety. She takes it upon herself to investigate the situation, which is exactly what she is doing when she finds herself at the Laird’s house drinking tea with his housekeeper. She is shocked at what she sees. She is chased by shadow men, then comes face to face with a dragon, at least that is what it looks like. Her world changes in that instant. Magic becomes a reality and Laird MacAlasdair becomes her protector. She knows his secret and becomes his ally in finding the man trying to kill him.

This story was unique which added to the reason why I liked it. I like a bit of paranormal and a dragon is a favorite of mine. It started on a good note. Then I decided that I loved Mina’s character. She was no nonsense and took care of herself. She was honest and told Laird MacAlasdair exactly what she thought. She was smart and the plans she came up with to help Stephen surprised even him. He was smart enough to see her as an asset and let her help.

Their journey to find the man and survive the creatures sent to hurt them was interesting, but the development of their relationship is what kept me reading. I give it a 4 out of 5.
