ARC Review : The Promise of Amazing by Robin Constantine (YA)

Book Blurb

Wren Caswell is average. Ranked in the middle of her class at Sacred Heart, she’s not popular, but not a social misfit. Wren is the quiet, “good” girl who's always done what she's supposed to—only now in her junior year, this passive strategy is backfiring. She wants to change, but doesn’t know how.

Grayson Barrett was the king of St. Gabe’s. Star of the lacrosse team, top of his class, on a fast track to a brilliant future—until he was expelled for being a “term paper pimp.” Now Gray is in a downward spiral and needs to change, but doesn’t know how.

One fateful night their paths cross when Wren, working at her family’s Arthurian-themed catering hall, performs the Heimlich on Gray as he chokes on a cocktail weenie, saving his life literally and figuratively. What follows is the complicated, awkward, hilarious, and tender tale of two teens shedding their pasts, figuring out who they are—and falling in love.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Wren Caswell is a quiet student and considered a good girl. Unfortunately that places her 49th out of 102nd in her class. Her teachers think she is too quiet and turn down her application for the National Honor’s Society. She hates how she is viewed. Her older sister is perfect and her older brother is outgoing. She is boring and forgettable. She doesn’t know what she wants or where she is going with her life. Her family owns Camelot, which hosts weddings and conferences. Maybe she will take it over sometime in the future. One weekend while working a wedding at the Camelot, Wren saves someone’s life and her life changes from that moment on.

Grayson Barrett was kicked out of St. Gabe’s School for a cheating business of writing papers for other people. He now goes to the public school. His friends from ST. Gabe’s dropped him and he no longer could play Lacrosse. He is on his own and making his way. He is trying to figure out what to do with his life too.

Grayson is attending the wedding at the Camelot where Wren is working. Wren is offering pigs in a blanket from her tray. Grayson grabs three and throws them in the air, attempting to catch them in his mouth. He gets two stuck in his throat and starts to choke. His family standing around him starts to panic, but Wren steps in and saves his life. Grayson is shocked at Wren’s actions. His interest in her grows. In fact he was drawn to her from the first moment that he saw her. He can’t get her out of his mind. He feels that a future with Wren feels right and decides to pursue her.

Unfortunately his past is rearing its ugly head and his past friends won’t let him walk away. Grayson is afraid that if Wren learns the truth, their relationship will be over before it even has a chance to get started.

I liked this book. Grayson was a great character. He was trying to change for the better and really deserve someone like Wren. I rooted for him from the very beginning and stayed with him the whole story. I love a bad boy reformed love story. They always have the best endings and the sweetest gestures from the bad boys. They are always sigh worthy. This story did not disappoint. It was fun to watch Wren and Grayson’s relationship develop. Even Gray’s past didn’t keep them down for long. I would definitely recommend this to all young adult readers. I give it a 4 out of 5.
