Hmmmmmm, so how do I review a short story and when I mean short, I mean short.....39 pages to be exact and for a romance/erotica, this was definitely a nugget, I had to check out!
So first, let's give you a short synopsis *pun intended*. Dorian North is a female American soldier fighting in the middle east. While on a mission, she accidentally cracks her head and is knocked unconscious only to wake up bound to a bed in chains. In the doorway is her "sexy as sin" captor. What she doesn't know is that he's also US military, although he's been retired for two years. Rob Hutcherson has made a home in the very country he was fighting. He feels disconnected from the US and has decided that even though he's not part of the war anymore, he feels most at home where he used to fight until he comes across an ambush while out for a stroll. When the fight is over, he decides to see if anyone is still alive and that's when he finds her. Something about Dorian screams "Mine" to Rob and he will do anything, and I mean anything to keep her safe, stay with her and to make the beautiful fallen comrade his.
So back to my initial question, how do you review a short story? Well let's start with the story. The story was a good. The setting for the two characters to find their HEA was plausible but a bit far fetched. I liked that the captive is a strong female character and the man, even though he's a sexy alpha male, is just totally smitten with love at first sight although I have to say, I'm not really buying the "love at first sight/soul mates" thingy. It really felt forced and way too fast. I definitely think the story idea is good and it had the beginnings of a fun read but I truly think it could have been better with some additional pages. Maybe dive into the "heart to heart" session or even add a chapter or two about their future plans *trying not to spoil too much*.
With all that being said, for an erotic romance, in 39 pages, we have a good story arc, good characters, some smexiness and a bit of drama. If you want something to read in the doctors' office or have an hour to kill. I think you'll enjoy this quick read.
