Review : The Iron Traitor (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #2) by Julie Kagawa (YA)

Book Blurb

In the real world, when you vanish into thin air for a week, people tend to notice.

After his unexpected journey into the lands of the fey, Ethan Chase just wants to get back to normal. Well, as "normal" as you can be when you see faeries every day of your life. Suddenly the former loner with the bad reputation has someone to try for-his girlfriend, Kenzie. Never mind that he's forbidden to see her again.

But when your name is Ethan Chase and your sister is one of the most powerful faeries in the Nevernever, "normal" simply isn't to be. For Ethan's nephew, Keirran, is missing, and may be on the verge of doing something unthinkable in the name of saving his own love. Something that will fracture the human and faery worlds forever, and give rise to the dangerous fey known as the Forgotten. As Ethan's and Keirran's fates entwine and Keirran slips further into darkness, Ethan's next choice may decide the fate of them all.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This book is the next in the Iron Fey series. It picks up right where the last one left off.

Ethan is back home from his recent visit to Nevernever and is being accused of kidnapping Kenzie. Kenzie has a stay in the hospital and her father threatens Ethan warning him to stay away. Of course the quarterback and his fellow players try to beat Ethan up in the parking lot at school. He is so not looking forward to what else could happen.

A visit from his sister informing him that his nephew, Keirran, has disappeared is the cherry on top of the trouble sundae that has developed since he has been back. Ethan waits to see what will happen.

However, it is not long before he is asked to find Keirran. Annwyl appears at his house asking for help to find Keirran. She is fading and wants to see him again. She is afraid of what Keirran will do to save her. Ethan couldn’t say no. They decide that the Goblin’s market in New Orleans is a good place to start the search. Now he has to tell his parents what he is going to do. He tells them the truth about what has been going on and what he must do. His mother forbids him to go and his dad wants to go in case he needs help. Ethan and Annwyl leave on their own to keep his family safe, barely escaping the Thin Man. The Thin Man is there for Annwyl but Ethan fights their way out.

The search and adventure begins in New Orleans as they search for Keirran. Kenzie meets them in the Goblin’s Market and saves them yet again. Secrets and precious memories are given before they find Keirran.

Once they find Keirran, the race is on to find something to help Annwyl before she fades. Keirran will do anything to save her. He leads Ethan and Kenzie on a dangerous quest and the results are disastrous for Nevernever. Ethan finds himself trying to protect Kenzie and help Keirran. He hopes Keirran’s stubbornness and single mindedness doesn’t get them killed.

This book was chalk full of adventure and action. I kept reading to see how they were going to make it from one place to another. The characters had so many things to overcome just to get to the places they needed to be. I felt sorry for Ethan. He was pulled into the whole situation by trying to be a true friend and risked his life. The ending was shocking and I can’t wait until the next book to see how it plays out. I love stories that blow my mind with the ending. This is one of those. I was very invested in the story and the characters. I want them to succeed in their quest to help Annwyl.

The storyline was excellent.

I give it a 4 out of 5
