Review : Gareth: Lord of Rakes (Lonely Lords #6) by Grace Burrowes (HR)

Book Blurb

She's caught between a rake and certain ruin…

Felicity Worthington's only hope of avoiding poverty—or worse—is to accept her distant cousin's dubious bequest…a thriving, high-class brothel. Felicity has 90 days to convince her cousin's solicitors that Gareth Alexander has taught her the art of pleasing a man, though she's more interested in the gentleman she glimpses beneath Gareth's debauched airs, than in the rake he's become.

In the business of love…How much should he teach her?

Gareth Alexander, Marquis of Heathgate, has little incentive to help a spinster learn to manage a brothel—except that the alternatives for the prim, pretty Miss Worthington are even worse. His resistance to teaching Felicity how to be a madam leaves Gareth wondering if the honor he'd thought long dead still survives, and if that honor allows him to yield to the lady's ruinous scheme…and to their shared desires.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Felicity Worthington has just inherited a brothel from her cousin. In order for her to sell the business and profit from it, she must keep it for a year and learn the ways of the business. She is an innocent spinster and her cousin provided a benefactor to help with her education. Gareth Alexander the Marquess of Heathgate has been named to teach her both the business and the pleasure side of the brothel. She is required to lose her virginity to Gareth as proof of her education.

Gareth knew Miss Worthington’s cousin and is shocked at the request. However, he is not able to turn her away or refuse Felicity’s request. He decides to become her teacher and seducer. He has his work cut out for him as she is completely innocent and he has to truly educate her on every aspect of seduction and pleasure. He realizes that baby steps are needed and finds as he goes along that he truly starts to like her. She is not just a means to fulfill a request to a close deceased friend. Eventually as his feelings grow, he feels that she would be better off without him and she will find someone who will suit her after they part ways.

Felicity develops feeling for Gareth, but knows she would not make a good wife for his title. They both fight the proper course and let their self-doubt interfere with their happiness. Their aim is to make it through the arrangement without total ruin. Of course, nothing goes as planned. It never does.

The storyline was very interesting and unique. The fact that a proper lady would inherit a brothel and then be demanded to learn the trade and possibly ruin her reputation is beyond thinking in that time. It was quite entertaining to watch Gareth try to fulfill the request. At times he didn’t know what to do with Felicity. She completely confused him at every turn. She reacted differently from what he expected. It was funny for me to watch. I love stories where women keep men on their toes and even aggravate them to an extent. Which Felicity did do to Gareth in this case.

I was afraid in the beginning I wouldn’t like the story when I started reading. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it. When things began to change a bit between the two main characters, I started investing in the relationship that they developed. I began really rooting for them to get together no matter what obstacles they encountered. I would recommend this book. Its story is interesting and the characters are cheer worthy.

I give it a 4 out of 5
