ARC Review : Hard As It Gets (Hard Ink #1) by Laura Kaye (CR)

Book Blurb

Tall, dark, and lethal...

Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome--pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.

With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.

Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge...

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This is a Hard Ink Novel. Becca Merritt is worried. Her brother Charlie is missing and she hasn’t heard from him even through their secret way. The last message he sent her told her to find Rixey at the Hard Ink Tattoo Shop. She shows up asking for Mr. Rixey and Jeremy shows up. Once she shows him the message, he explains that it his brother Nick that she wants.

Nick comes in behind her and she shows him the message and pleads her case. He turns a cold shoulder and shrugs. He doesn’t want to have anything to do with Merritts again. He is still reeling from the last time he encountered her father. She leaves the shop without any hope for help.

Becca’s father ruined Nick’s life and career. He was Nick’s CO and he is sworn to secrecy about the whole event. He doesn’t want to help Becca because of her name but his training to help is too strong. He stakes our her house to make sure she is safe. One night he watches her return home and notices someone is upstairs. He rushes the house to help. Becca trying to protect herself almost knifes him thinking he is the intruder. Knowing she isn’t safe he takes her back to his loft. He then learns that her brother’s house has been ransacked. Someone is looking for something important.

He fears for her and is determined to protect her. When she is almost abducted in broad daylight from a busy hospital, he knows he has to bite the bullet and call in his team. He has been avoiding them for the last year, letting his guilt overtake him. He shut them out and he doesn’t know if they will even come to help. He is hoping this will give them the information they need to clear their names. Charlie Merritt found something about his father and Nick thinks this is the reason he went missing.

Now that the team is here and the tension is high, Becca knows that this makes everything more complicated but she is not quite sure why. Things are about to get really complicated and painful for Becca. Her life is about to change as she learns secrets about Nick, her father, and herself. Nothing will ever be the same.

I loved this book. The characters where awesome. Becca had just enough strength to make her tough. I loved her character. The boys were humorous and easy to like. I liked the tough exterior and the hidden softer side. I hope I see them again in other books. Nick was my favorite character though, he is full of guilt and angst. It was fun to watch him figure things out about his team and Becca. His inter turmoil made his investigation more interesting. His normal coolness and detachment weren’t present. Becca made all sorts of feelings bubble to the surface in him. I love it when a woman brings a tough man to his knees. My favorite type of story. It was a fun read. I have really come to love this author. She became one of my favorites after the first book I read of hers.

 I so give this a 5 out of 5
I hope she keeps these characters coming
