ARC Review : Born Wild (Black Knights Inc. #5) by Julie Ann Walker (CR)

Book Blurb

1. Trust no one… Eve Edens has been abandoned, used, or manipulated by almost everyone she's ever met. Born into ridiculous wealth, she's dealt with the petty jealousies and sordid little resentments for nearly thirty years. But after three botched attempts on her life, she can no longer ignore the truth. Someone wants her dead.

2. Avoid the bad boys at all costs… William "Wild Bill" Reichert, the wonderfully sexy boy who abandoned her years ago, is back in town. Only he's no boy. Now he's a covert operative - and he's all man. When Eve hires Bill to help her discover who is behind the attacks, Bill soon comes to suspect it's someone much closer to Eve than she dares to believe.

3. And never fall for the same ruse twice… The search for the killer takes Bill and Eve deep into the dark secrets and strange world of the rich and famous, and into the heart of red-hot passion re-ignited by the peril that threatens to consume them both. But does Eve dare risk her heart on Bill a second time?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Eve Edens is a Chicago socialite whose father is a big businessman. She is working toward her doctorate and making her own path. Her father is not happy with the choices she has been making for herself, but that has not stopped her from doing what makes her happy.

Lately though, she has been having some dangerous accidents. In fact she has been lucky to walk away from them. Her apartment caught fire, she was almost mugged in a parking lot and the latest is the brakes failing on her scooter. She had to drive it into the lake. She almost drowned. Eve decides that she can’t be this unlucky and believes someone is trying to kill her. The police don’t believe her. They can explain each incident away as an accident. She is scared and turns to the one person she has been trying to avoid, Wild Bill Reichert.

Bill Reichert is a motorcycle mechanic at Black Knights Inc. He is also a member of an elite group of ex-military men that work under the radar to help people in need. That is the secret that Eve knows and has sworn never to tell. So she knows they can help her, if they will believe her.

Bill has loved Eve since she was eighteen and he was twenty-one, but she broke his heart. He doesn’t trust her and doesn’t want to be close to her. His feelings are messed up when it comes to her. When he sees her and hears her out, he knows something isn’t right. He and his boys decide that she has something to fear and keep her there with them.

They decide that someone close to her is trying to kill her. Eve can’t believe someone hates her enough to kill her. She has to turn to Bill for protection and help. Their history has created this big divide between them and it is uncomfortable to be around him. She loves him still and her guilt for being weak twelve years ago eats at her. She knows she let her father manipulate her into marriage to another man after Bill had left for the Navy. She blames herself for so much.

When the person trying to kill her hires hit men to come after her, she has to fight to stay alive. An innocent person dies from a stray bullet and she blames herself. Her guilt becomes almost unbearable. Her world is spiraling out of control and she knows that if she hadn’t given in to her father twelve years ago, her life would be so different now.

This is the first book from this author I have read. I liked the mystery and the guessing game she provides the reader. It took me awhile to figure out who was behind it all. The story kept me guessing and I love books like that.

I felt sorry for Eve when she found out everything. It completely blew her world apart. All the secrets that surrounded her came out and some were shocking. I did get tired of watching Eve and Bill dance around each other. They let their hurt and distrust from the past cloudy the present and their future. It started to annoy me after awhile and I felt enough already. With that said I did think the storyline was excellent. It pulled me in right from the start with Eve’s scooter accident. Unfortunately her character was a bit weaker than I like and I wish she would have been a bit feistier. I would root for her to take control and then would be disappointed when she chickened out. It is a personal preference. However, I do recommend the book. It is a great story.
I give it a 4 out of 5
