Review : Vampire Thirst (Book 2 of the Dragon Heat series) by Ella J. Phoenix (PNR)

Book Blurb

Sometimes life takes you down a completely different path from the one you had originally planned.

After successfully rescuing the daughter of a draconian senator and other innocent women from a vampire psychopath, Sam and fellow warriors, Zoricah and Yara, have to trade sunny New York for gloomy London. Time is running out on their unfinished mission. More innocent people will die if they don’t catch the person behind the attacks in New York. But something is making Sam lose control of her powers. Something or someone. Ever since her first - and quite heated - encounter with Hikuro, her energies had gone haywire. The vampire king’s second in command affected her in a way no one had ever before. Her torment, however, is bound to get worse, with Hikuro’s unexpected arrival in London.

Ever since she set foot on vampire territory, Sam had turned Hikuro’s carefully controlled life upside down. He doesn’t trust her, but some strange force pulled him toward her; an inexplicable attraction that defies centuries of training. But if Hikuro is to keep his king safe, he must keep a close eye on Sam, even if he loses his sanity and his heart in the process.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Samantha, one of the female trio, has been investigating the vampire kidnapping and killing people in the US. She has been with Zoricah, the dragon demigoddess, and Yara, the Brazilian witch, for years. Zoricah broke her out of a mental institution forty years ago and they have been together ever since.

Zoricah, Yara, and Sam found and killed the vampire serial killer with the help of the Vampire King and his men. However, the evidence pointed to the fact that the vampire had help. So they are back on the case looking for any accomplices that were involved. The girls head to England where Sam is from and she isn’t very happy to be back. Her past dogs her at every turn while she is here. In fact, Sam thinks she sees her old doctor from the mental institution and follows the man to the orphanage she grew up in. She has a panic attack and loses control of her power. She is afraid of losing complete control and hurting someone.

Hikuro is the second in command for the vampire king. He was sent by his king to help in the investigation. He is annoyed with Sam as she invokes feelings in him that he doesn’t want. He is attracted to her but she pushes him away. He, in turn, acts cold and distant to her to hide his attraction. She pushes him away for fear that she will lose control of her powers and kill him. Yet neither will admit to their true feelings.

When Hikura joins Sam in the investigation, his protective side surfaces as he protects her. He is determined to keep her safe from her past and those they pursue. Sam learns that she may be the key to the whole case. She has to confront her past and find out who she is. The nightmares she has are more than dreams. They are memories that she must face in order to save lives. She knows what she must do and knows that if she finds trouble Hikuro will come for her.

This is the second book in the series and I did not read the first one. With that said I will most definitely go back and rectify that. I really liked this story. I liked that Sam had to face her demons and the danger that she causes to others and herself. The fact that the cold ninja, Hikuro, is the one that ends up helping her is very fitting. I like the two together as they are opposites of each other but compliment each other well.

The author also revisited the main characters from the first book and gave them their own sub storyline in this one. I like when authors keep past characters very much in the story. Readers invest in those characters and want to continue seeing them. Well done in that part of the story.

There was also a lot of mystery surrounding Samantha’s past and action when finding the answers. It kept me reading wanting to know what happens next. I can’t wait to read Yara’s story.

I give this one a 4 out of 5
