Review : Through the Zombie Glass (White Rabbit Chronicles #2) by Gena Showalter (YA/PNR)

Book Blurb

Inspired by the childhood classic Alice in Wonderland, this harrowing and romantic story features teen zombie slayer Alice Bell who has lost so much—family, friends, her home. After a strange new zombie attack, Alice fears she may be losing her mind as well. A terrible darkness blooms inside her, urging her to do wicked things. The whispers of the dead assault her ears and mirrors seem to come frighteningly to life. She’s never needed her team of zombie slayers more—including her boyfriend, Cole—than she does now. But as Cole strangely withdraws and the zombies gain new strength, Ali knows one false step may doom them all.
Toot's Review

Through the Zombie Glass is Gena Showalter`s second book in her White Rabbit Chronicles YA series. The story in a nutshell is basically a Zombie slayers meets PNR with the classic Lewis Carroll Alice In Wonderland icons scattered throughout (see Toot`s review of the first book).

This sophomore addition to the story line picks up right where the first book left off. Alice is recovering from being stabbed by her boyfriend Cole , on accident of course. Being stabbed aside, life is good. She`s in love, she has purpose and she kicks ass but that all comes crashing down around her in the blink of an eye or a bite of a Zombie. Also a few new characters show up to add fuel to the fire and tear the lovers apart. Nothing will ever be the same.

Gena has definitely used this book as an opportunity to change the game. It completely changes everything the first story set up. It's darker, it's sexier and believe it or not, it's more action packed. The entire story boils down to the immortal words of author Sherrilyn Kenyon "Sometimes things have to go wrong in order to go right."

I thoroughly enjoyed this installment probably a bit more then I enjoyed the first one. I do agree with a lot of the reviews out there that say this skirts the line of YA. There's no actual sex going on but everyone is talking about it and describing their conquests. And of course the guys are all man-whores and the girls are all virgins. I would almost place this in the NA category but I digress. Sexiness aside, I still love the twist on the classic Zombie tale and the story is still dark and creepy. Besides the chapter titles, there was less of the "Alice in Wonderland" infusion of the classic into this story but I did find that the feel of the story still went along with the weirdness of the original. There were parts of the story that I definitely got the whole acid-trip vibe, like "WTF is going on?". Other then those observations, I think it was a successful second book and I'm totally looking forward to the next.

4 out of 5 books
