Review : Red Hill by Jamie McGuire (Zombies/Dystopia)

Book Blurb

When the world ends, can love survive?

For Scarlet, raising her two daughters alone makes fighting for tomorrow an everyday battle. Nathan has a wife, but can’t remember what it’s like to be in love; only his young daughter Zoe makes coming home worthwhile. Miranda’s biggest concern is whether her new VW Bug is big enough to carry her sister and their boyfriends on a weekend escape from college finals.

When reports of a widespread, deadly “outbreak” begin to surface, these ordinary people face extraordinary circumstances and suddenly their fates are intertwined. Recognizing they can’t outrun the danger, Scarlet, Nathan, and Miranda desperately seek shelter at the same secluded ranch, Red Hill. Emotions run high while old and new relationships are tested in the face of a terrifying enemy—an enemy who no longer remembers what it’s like to be human.

Set against the backdrop of a brilliantly realized apocalyptic world, love somehow finds a way to survive. But what happens when the one you’d die for becomes the one who could destroy you?

Red Hill grabs you from page one and doesn’t let go until its stunning conclusion. This is #1 New York Times bestselling author Jamie McGuire at her unforgettable best.

Toot's Review

Ok well, I just finished Red Hill by Jamie McGuire and now I have to review it *sigh*. Let me preface this review with just stating that I love zombie and I love Jamie McGuire, I also love doughnuts and I love fish but do I think any of them should be put together, sadly the answer is a big fat NO!

Normally at this point I'd give you a brief synopsis but honestly, the book is like every post-apocalyptic TV show you've ever watched and yes I said TV show. The book totally reads like it. I've seen this same plot play out with everything from bombs to weather disasters to viruses and now zombies. It's the same survival story. What do you do when the world goes to hell in a hand basket. Some people loose their ever-lovin' minds, some are cannon fodder and some band together and survive. In Red Hill, you have 3 separate peoples' stories that eventually collide in the middle of the book at the house on Red Hill. People get bit and turn into zombies. Those that aren't bit, survive. Then it's a matter of how you go about surviving. You fight zombies, you risk your life, there's no resources, it's dog eat dog, some people suck, some don't and some people just die. There is a sort of HEA mixed in through the carnage but honestly it's more about the post-apocalypse then a HEA. If you can't tell, I'm so disappointed I could spit. I was really hoping for something different but I feel like I could turn on the Sci-Fi channel on any given weekend and see the same darn story. Uggg, I'm done with this review!
