Book Blurb
When Cait Douglass resolves to get over her broken heart, throw off her inhibitions, and start really living, she’s unprepared for the two sensual men who cross her path. Torn between them, she doesn’t know which to choose--or what kind of dire consequences could follow.
Jim Heron, fallen angel and reluctant savior, is ahead in the war, but he puts everything at risk when he seeks to make a deal with the devil--literally. As yet another soul is unwittingly caught in the battle between him and the demon Devina, his fixation on an innocent trapped in Hell threatens to sidetrack him from his sacred duty...
Can good still prevail if true love makes a savior weak? And will a woman’s future be the key, or the curse, for all of humanity? Only time, and hearts, will tell.
Toot's Review
Hmmmmm so what are my thoughts on Possession? Well I should preface this review by saying this.....I LOVE BDB, I LOVE BDB, I LOVE BDB. The Angels.....meh! So what do I mean by that statement, well I absolutely love me some J. R. Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood but her Angels series, not so much. The Brothers sucked me in from the very beginning and when I found out she was doing the Angels series, I was so excited but sadly it has never drawn me in. Yes, it's written well and being a fan, I still buy every single one but it just doesn't tingle me to my toes like BDB does. So why would I tell you that, well because I guess I want you to know where my review is coming from. I try to tell you guys if I'm gaga over an author or a story because I know this clouds my reviews. I mean really, there are a handful of authors that could roll their heroes in stinky, dog dung and I would say they smelled like flowers and I totally know and own this fact but I do try to warn you when I'm going to go all gooey, LOL. J. R. Ward is one of these authors in the BDB world but sadly, not so much with the Angels.
So what's Possession about? Ok here's your synopsis..... Possession is the fifth installment in J. R. Ward's Fallen Angel series. In this book we have a bit of a game changer. If you're not sure what the whole series is about, let me shine a light on it as best I can.
Jim Heron has been chosen by the good side and bad side as a "savior". The ultimate game piece in a very twisted game of good vs. evil. God has decided that he wants to play the ultimate game. Whichever side wins, rules the earth. There are seven rounds with seven souls that are "at risk" and Jim must convince them to choose the right path. With each win, a flag is given and unfortunately Hell has 2 flags.
In Possession, Jim traded one of the good sides' flags for the trapped soul of a girl named Sissy. Ever since Jim found her real life body, he has been fixated on her and vowed to free her from Hell. When he was presented in the last book with the opportunity to free her, he took it by trading one of the coveted flags away for her. By doing so, he assumed he could trade it and free her, easy peesy but he didn't realize that dealing with the devil would have repercussions. With Jim's heart on the line and his precious Sissy back in his life, his focus is not where it needs to be and the devil is making her move.
Enter Cait Douglass. She's an old art teacher of Sissy's and has been very unlucky in love until she meets a gorgeous actor/singer while out with a friend. On the same night she meets a mysterious stranger whom she can't help but be drawn to. Both men want her attention and both men share a very heated and disturbing past. Is Cait the next soul in jeopardy or is she just a pawn in another, more darker, game? *queue the mystery music....... dum, dum, dum*
Ok now that I've piqued your interest, what did I think???? Well I liked the story threads which J. R. expertly weaves throughout but I'm still left with more questions than answers, which I didn't like. I totally dig how she drops in cameos of the BDB and uses the same world that's been built in BDB for the Angels. There were lots of surprises and unexpected twists that I didn't see coming and yes, Dog is.......*ha, ha not telling you!*
Overall it's a nice addition to the series as a whole and was definitely a game changer, which was needed because to me, the series as a whole was losing its spark or I was losing interest, although as I stated earlier, wasn't hard for me *squirrel!*
Ok back on track, here's the rundown for those that know the story. Jim is still the ultimate pawn and Davina's plaything. Davina is still as OCD as ever and yep she still goes to see her shrink. Ad is still torn up over Eddie's death. They all move into a very creepy mansion that is rejuvenating itself. Sissy can see halos and possibly the souls in play but Jim and Ad have their heads so far up their own asses that they miss this clue. Sissy has also decided to enter the game, so look out for her having a bigger role in future books. And lastly, Heaven is not as safe as it once was and things, they are a changin'.
So one more thing I wanted to say is that I did like the HEA but it did feel a little forced towards the end. I mean we go from the couple being compatible sexually but when it came to the two of them holding a normal conversation, no so much. Than one tragic event happens and they're like "I love you". Yeah not sure I buy it but it was definitely an overall sweet HEA, so go figure. I'll give it a 4 book rating because it's written well and I did like it but it didn't make me squeee.
