Review : Love, Tink (Love, Tink #1-6) by Elle Strauss (YA)

Book Blurb

Tink is hopelessly smitten with Peter, the leader of the Lost Boys who'd mysteriously arrived at Neverland two years ago. Unfortunately, Peter is tired of the adventure and especially tired of dodging Captain Hook who is after his head. He just wants to go back to New York City and live his life as a normal fifteen-year-old.

Tink is the only one who can help Peter return, but it breaks her heart to do it. She just wants to make him happy, so she does the unthinkable and betrays the fairy king. Now her heart is filled with remorse. Should she go after Peter? Should she follow him to his New York?

Originally published as six separate novella episodes, Love, Tink the complete series is all six stories together in one volume.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This story is a modern take on Peter Pan. It starts in Neverland when Peter has been there for two years already. Tinkerbell is a fairy who works for Captain Hook as a result of a treaty between Hook and the fairies. Tinkerbell arrives every morning and cleans the cave Hook calls his own when not on his ship.

Tinkerbell has a huge crush on Peter, but she is a fairy and he is a human boy. She protects him from Hook when she can. She would do anything for Peter. So when Peter tells Tink he wants to go home to New York City, she wants to help him but lies about a way to get back. She agonizes over his happiness and decides that she will steal the missing queen’s fairy dust to help Peter get home.

Once Peter finds out she lied to him, he becomes angry and Tink almost changes her mind. However, she knows that Peter is trapped and plans to help him. She is able to steal the dust and send Peter home. After Peter leaves, Tink is heartbroken. She knows she did the right thing, but she will never see him again. She hopes that he will change his mind and come back, but as time goes on she knows he is not.

She continues to be devastated and makes a decision. She is going to New York City too. She still has a bottle of the queen’s fairy dust. She asks Jangle, another fairy, to send her to find Peter. Jangle pours the dust over both of them and they land in Central Park. They are no longer fairies but human teenage girls. They are shocked at what they see and have to do to survive. A boy named Dylan helps them sell a jewel, find a place to live, buy clothes, and tells them where Peter goes to school. Tink becomes Belle and Jangle becomes Jan and they enroll into the same high school that Peter and Dylan go to. Belle is shocked to see Peter in the hallways of the school. He looks so different. The last time she saw him he looked two years younger and it seems he has aged to where he should be now that he is back. Her biggest shock is that he already has a girlfriend named Wendy. Belle is heartbroken again and can’t find the courage to tell him who she really is. She hoped he would recognize her on his own, but he isn’t thinking she would ever be in NYC. She has decided there is nothing for her here and she needs to go back to Neverland. She tells Peter who she is and then good bye.

Peter is in complete shock that Belle is actually Tinkerbell. Then he gets another shock the next day when Hook shows up as his substitute teacher. Hook wants something from Peter, something Peter’s dad has. Peter has no clue what it is and he is afraid that Belle has left. Belle stays and decides that protecting Peter is the most important thing. She must travel both worlds to keep Peter safe from Hook. Things spin out of control and Tink and Peter’s future is in question. With Hook on the loose, nothing is going as it should.

I loved this modern take on the story of Peter Pan. It was a fun read. It was entertaining to watch Tinkerbell fall for Peter and then be able to act on her feelings when she becomes human. It was a fast read that kept the reader guessing about what would be happening next. I would definitely recommend this book to young adult readers. In fact I will actually post this on my books to read board at school.

I give it a 4 out of 5
