Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Lara has been kidnapped and held in a dark cell for months. They inject her will this drug to enhance any Psi ability she has. They study what the effects are and what it enables her to do. She is beaten and starved by her captors so she will do what they want. Unknown to her captors, Lara is able to escape in her mind to what she calls the Citadel. Her dream lover is there and it is the only place she feels safe.

Miles has lived through mental torture and in order to survive has had to build a strong mental shield to protect himself from the outside world. He is still overwhelmed by his senses and the information processed by his different functioning brain. He attempted to find Lara in the beginning after she went missing when a friend had enlisted his help. He could find no trace of her and had to stop when he was tortured himself and unable to function.

As a result, he went off on his own where it was quiet so he would feel like he wasn’t completely crazy. He would shut off contact with his family and friends. The only thing remotely resembling human contact was his dream lover. She would show up in his head. He looked forward to that time and welcomed the woman who he embraced.

He would soon find out that it wasn’t a dream. It was Lara and she had found a way through his shield. She sought him out to protect herself and hide for those who followed her in to what she called the vortex, where she went when she saw her visions. However, they couldn’t follow her to the Citadel. She was the only one who could get passed the shield. Once Miles found out that Lara was real and she was still alive, he set out to rescue her. He tells her to give him details of where she is in his head.

The information she tells him infuriates him. The man who kidnapped her is the same one that has given him and his team the run around. He knew that Thaddeus Greaves was behind it. He felt it in his gut. He and his team come up against Greaves while rescuing Lara and discover exactly what he is capable. Greaves is a powerful Psi and he is able to cause serious trouble with his mind. Miles is the only one with a strong enough shield to withstand what Greaves throws at them. Greaves wants Lara and Miles knows he will keep coming for her. He has to keep her safe as well as protect his friends from the Psi power Greaves is capable of.

I took me a while to get into this book. I have not read any of the previous books where you encounter these characters. So the back stories and situations were a bit confusing to me. I would recommend reading those first. This book does stand alone, but knowing the history of the characters would probably make the story better.

There is a lot of action and angst. The psychological enhancements of the characters make things unique. I like that the good guys are not capable as a group to stop the bad guy. They are vulnerable and have to rely mainly on Miles to stop him. Lara is pretty tough for being held captive for months. I really liked her character. The insecurities and doubts made her more relatable and human. Miles was a great character also. He didn’t know what to do and had to distance himself. His attitude was very believable. It was a fun read.

I would give it a 4 out of 5
