Review : Descended (Fallen Guardian Saga #1) by Debra Ann Miller (PNR)

Book Blurb

Destiny has two ways of crushing us…by refusing our wishes…and fulfilling them.

Vie had no idea when she descended into the small town of Newcastle, Wyoming that she’d find herself mesmerized by the mysterious and alluring eyes of one Carter Stone. And Carter believed he knew everyone that lived in his rural town until the day he locked eyes with Vivian Thorne. He couldn’t help but wonder what was different about this girl he had known all of his life.

He was right, Vie was the beautiful young Guardian that had been sent to their world looking for Carter and she did so merged in the vessel of the Thorne girl. Their meeting sparks a passionate romance between the two and soon after they embark on their journey to uncover the secrets of a past that they begin to realize they both shared. Their forbidden connection unleashes a war with disapproving parties and the lovers find themselves on a mission to uncover the truth of their not wholly human existence and their unbreakable bond.

Darkness falls as Lucian returns to settle a score with them and their lives take a thrilling and terrifying turn. The only way for Carter to stop Lucian and save the one he holds most dear is to unlock the secrets of his past and unleash the powers within him. What are the chances that two raindrops, flung from the heavens, will merge on a windowpane? Gotta be fate!

Deeply passionate and extraordinarily suspenseful, Descended captures the struggles between doing what is expected of you and unleashing your destiny, between fulfilling prophecies and desires, between loyalty and love.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This is the first book in the Fallen Guardian Saga. Violet is a guardian and is finally getting her first assignment. She needs to merge with a human girl named Vivian Thorne. Her assignment is to find Carter Stone and help him realize his destiny. He is the chosen one and she has one year to complete the task. With the help of her best friend, Gabriel and the other members of her team she is excited to finally have a chance to prove herself.

Violet, or Vie, enters Vivian’s body while the girl is still in the hospital after brain surgery. Merging with her body is harder than Vie expected. Vivian fights for control, especially when Jeremy is around. Jeremy is Vivian’s boyfriend and produces strong emotions from her soul. Vie has to push Jeremy away in order to continue with her assignment. She claims amnesia where she doesn’t remember him. She is able to get him to back off as she finds Carter. She feels guilty interfering but knows when she is gone, Jeremy will have Vivian back.

While the guardians are in Newcastle, Wyoming trying to complete their mission with Carter and keeping him safe, one of their own is following the road of betrayal. The guardian Reese is disillusioned by the guardians’ ways of dealing with humans and seeks out to help Lucien, the fallen angel. Reese believes that he too is fallen and that is where he is supposed to be. Now that Reese has joined Lucien and his demons, Gabriel fears for Vie’s life. He wants to send her home, but she is making progress with Carter and he can’t justify the actions. While his tries to make her see reason of how dangerous this mission has become, she argues and refuses to go. During the argument, Vie develops this golden aura around her. Gabriel is completely shocked and then smiles a huge smile. He knew his best friend was special and this divine development is what they need to turn the mission around.

Unbeknownst to the guardians, another of their kind is filled with jealousy when Vie is allowed to go on the mission and she is not. She is determined to find out why. When she learns the secret, the shock is almost overwhelming. She decides to reveal this information to Lucien where she strikes up a bargain. The knowledge about Violet’s soul is the secret to the mission. Few know the truth and now Lucien has an edge over the guardians. When Gabriel learns the truth about Violet, he sees red when he realizes how in the dark he was when this mission started. He is bound from telling her the truth to keep the mission on track. Lucien learns the truth and uses it against the guardians and Violet. Carter comes full circle as he protects Violet.

This story was intriguing. The mighty angel, Gabriel, is the leader of the guardians. He is thought of as this powerful angel that is an important warrior protecting mankind. He is thought of as fierce and ready to battle. Yet he seems more human with how the author portrays his relationship with Violet. He is her friend and mentor. She makes him vulnerable and it shows with what he will sacrifice for her. They are very close and trust each other completely.

Violet is trying to prove she is a good guardian. She is using trial and error, plus her instinct to get the job done. Her determination is felt by the reader as the story progresses. The author makes her relatable to the reader. She has had training, but she realizes that her first mission is not easy and she has to think on her feet. Her confusion about her feelings for Carter and her abnormalities as a guardian is front and center throughout the story also. It adds to her allure as a main character and the reader roots for her the whole story. She is finding her way in a world she was dropped into. I wasn’t happy how it ended but I know it was preparing for the next book. I will definitely read it to see how the story progresses.

I give it a 4 out of 5

Author Info

I am a happily married, devoted mom of 3 living in Naperville, Illinois. I'm married to a fifth grade teacher, who is my best friend and soul mate. Being "Mom" for the past 23 years has been my privilege but really didn't allow me the time I needed to pursue what I loved most...writing. I put my interests on the back burner while I carted kids off to soccer games, baseball practice, and back home to make dinner and help with homework. By the time my head hit the pillow I was off to dream land where my imagination flourished.

After my grandmother passed away, I decided that life was too short to put the things we love to do on hold. The next day my story took flight. I felt compelled to put the words inside my head to the pages of my old school notebook. I wrote freehand whenever I could and the more I wrote the more the characters came to life. Carter and Vie began having conversations in my head daily and I found myself addicted to writing their story. Nine months later I finished and published, Descended (Fallen Guardian Saga #1).

I am so excited to have published my second novel, Ascended (Fallen Guardian Saga #2).I hope people will enjoy reading them as much as I have enjoyed writing them. :)
