Book Blurb
Shay Tafford's childhood has been fatherless, filled instead with memories of speaking to the dead. She is forced to hide her unique ability from those living around her. That's why it's been comforting to have Jeremy, a child ghost, as her confidante. But recently he's been absent, perhaps lost as her father is. When Shay meets Hugh, the guy she's had a crush on for weeks, and finds he can speak to ghosts too she's just starting to find a normalcy in her life.
But as Hugh reveals the truth to Shay, about who she really is and about what it is she can do, he erases all chances she had at a normal existence. Turns out talking to ghosts is just scratching the surface of her genetically engineered gifts. Shay learns she may be part of an age old prophecy that could save the entire race of cryptids. But can she?
Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Three years later Shay meets another young ghost, Wendy. Wendy is lost and looking for her father. Jeremy has told Wendy about Shay’s gift and believes Shay can help. Wendy wants Shay to summon her father to the living plane. Once Shay tries and succeeds her life changes. Jeremy is able to enter her life again.
One night when meeting Jeremy near the orphanage, Shay finds Hugh talking to the ghosts of the children. Hugh is the college boy that Shay has been crushing on from afar when she is on campus. She goes frequently as her mom is a psychology professor. It turns out Hugh knows more about Shay than she realizes. They are tied together in ways she never believed possible.
He knows her father and in fact his parents knew him before she was born. They know what he was working on as a geneticist. They are able to answer lots of questions for her about her gift. She is a Cryptid just like they are. She has special abilities as did her father. In fact he gave her his ability before he was taken. They all think he was taken by the darkness. The evil man shrouded in darkness that fears the prophesy. The prophesy that Shay seems to be half of. Hugh is her mate and together they have the strength to destroy the darkness. He is coming for them, trying to stop them before they are able to fulfill their destiny.
This novella was a bit choppy to me. Shay had a lot of things thrown at her at one moment and then she would transition back to her teen views. It was a bit hard to follow. This seems to be an interesting series, but the cryptid story is a bit confusing. I think the novella was too short. This probably needed to be a full novel in order to give the reader more information.
