"Tag. I found you."
Just as Annie Bell's reputation as one of the best chefs in the Pacific Northwest grows to new heights, she receives a threatening phone call from her abusive ex-boyfriend. Marco is out on parole and hungry for revenge, blaming her for his ten-year imprisonment. Fearing for her life and that of her young son, Annie reluctantly accepts help from Drake Webber, a cold and wealthy recluse hiding a dark history of his own. Supported by the gang of misfits from their restaurant Riversong, Annie forges ahead despite her growing terror that Marco will appear at any moment and make good on his threats.
Author Tess Thompson (formerly known as Tess Hardwick) reunites the colorful cast of endearing small-town characters from her bestselling novel Riversong and takes you on a journey that will renew your faith in love, friendship and the power of community - even in the face of seemingly insurmountable grief and fear.
You'll find yourself once again cheering for the residents of River Valley, especially the big-hearted and compassionate Annie Bell.
Riverbend - Amazon, iTunes, Kobo, Barnes and Noble
This is the second book in the River series. We revisit River Valley and see all the characters from the first book. It is two years later and the restaurant is a great success. Riverbend is Annie’s story. She became Lee’s partner in Riversong and is the chef for the restaurant. The restaurant gets rave reviews in Food and Wine Magazine and entices people from all around.
Drake is a businessman who has recently sold his company and built a house next to the river in River Valley. He is a broken man and is looking for a place to become a recluse. He decides to hire Annie to cook for him. She comes in on her day off from the restaurant and cooks meals to freeze for the week. He is so rude to her that she wants to turn him down, but the money he is offering is too good to pass up.
One night Annie gets a call, her past is catching up with her. The man she ran from and Alder’s father has now found her. Drake offers his house as her safe haven. His security system is one that she and her son can be safe. She and Alder move in and become a daily fixture in Drake’s life of a recluse. He slowly opens up to help her. However, the tragedy that brought him to River Valley stands in the way of any closeness he can feel for Annie.
As Annie’s feelings for Drake grow so does her fear and she relies on Drake more and more. She is being threatened and knows it is just a matter of time. Her nightmares are frequent and she wars with herself. She feels she will never be safe or loved by any man but her son. Despair is closing in on her.
This was a great continuation of the story from the first book. All the previous characters were there and it was fabulous to see the successes from the other book continue. The reader becomes more invested in the story and characters. This group of misfits seems to burrow their way into the hearts of readers as does the small town life.
Annie has been one of my favorite characters and I liked how her story unfolds. It really showed the strength of her character and her integrity. She made it through the trials of her young adult life and came out the other side a strong, single mom. The reader roots for her from the very beginning.
This series is full of characters that you fall in love with and hope to see their happy endings. I give this book a 4 out of 5.
Tess Thompson is a novelist and playwright with a BFA in Drama from the University of Southern California. In 2011, she released her first novel, Riversong, which subsequently became a bestseller.
Like the characters in the River Valley collection, Tess is from a small town in Oregon. She currently lives in a suburb of Seattle, Washington with her two young daughters, Emerson and Ella. She is inspired daily by the view of the Cascade Mountains from her home office window.
Tess is working on her next novel and regularly blogs about her journey as a mother, author and friend at www.tesswrites.com.
