Review : Evigilantem: The Awakening by Kaileigh Dillon (YA)

Book Blurb

Crissy Anderson is accustomed to moving all around the country with Dylan Lawson, her self-appointed guardian and friend since she was six. The only thing unusual about the situation is that he happens to be a demon. Always on the move, she's not surprised when he decides to move them to a small town in Colorado. Things are seemingly normal. A new school - complete with new bullies, a cute boy, and even a few friends. Then, when Dylan suddenly decides to pay a much awaited visit to his father, Crissy is left in the hands of his older brother and sister-in-law. It's not long before Crissy finds herself dangerously tangled up in Dylan's family life. She finds herself caught in a game of cat and mouse with a 1000 year old demon with nowhere to hide. But Crissy has secrets of her own... secrets that even Dylan has been keeping from her. What happens when her whole life turns out to be a lie and she doesn't even know who or what she is anymore?

"in the reflection stood a girl I was not used to seeing. She mimicked my movements, but we looked so different. She had short, silver hair and violet eyes, unlike me with my green eyes and black hair with purple tips."

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This is a YA story written by a young author. It follows the main character Crissy, whose father disappeared when she was six. She was taken in and raised by a demon named Dylan. Throughout the ten years she has been with Dylan, they have moved many times. They recently move to Colorado and Crissy starts another new school. She immediately knows how the other kids will react to her. It is the same everywhere she goes.

Once settled in Colorado, Crissy meets Dylan’s brother. She is shocked to find he has one. In fact she is starting to learn Dylan’s secrets. He is a demon hunter that kills humans and he killed her father. Crissy is shocked to find out what Dylan really does at night when he leaves. He has kept this and other things from her for ten years. Crissy is conflicted and angry.

However, she believes that if he was really a monster he would have killed her long ago. He has taken care of her and helped her for a long time. She didn’t deserve to be helped or taken care of by Dylan and she believes that anything that happens to her is something she deserves. Everything up to this point has been her fault.

Dylan’s father, Zak, is now plotting to kill Crissy. She is shocked to learn that Zak even exists and fears for her life. He has taken two attempts at her life before Dylan sends her to safety for her school break. While hiding in safety, Crissy finds out more about herself and the extent Zak will go to get her.

This was an interesting story. I could tell it was written by a young author as it jumped around a bit. It was the first in a series, so the story continues from here. The relationships that are present during the story were a bit confusing especially with Dylan. I think there could have been a bit more detail to give the reader a better picture. Crissy had a major chip on her shoulder and her emotions were all over the place. That made some parts of the book confusing as she jumped around with her thoughts. It was a fast read and the storyline was an original idea.

I would probably give it a 3 out of 5
