Review : The White Thread by K. B. Hoyle (YA)

Book Blurb

For a year, Darcy Pennington has agonized over the fate of her dear friend Yahto Veli who sacrificed himself to set her free at the end of her last year in Alitheia. As her third trip to the magical land approaches, Darcy wonders if the daring rescue she desires to launch will be allowed to go forward. Darcy soon comes to realize, however, that much more is at stake than merely the rescue of her friend. Her return to Alitheia is marked by the mysterious disappearance of Colin Mackaby, and a new message from the Oracle adds to the riddles that the Six must decipher if they are to expell Tselloch from the land. Along the way relationships will be created and destroyed, and for some characters, the deepest scars are those that cannot be seen.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This is the third installment of the Gateway Series. I really like this series. In the White Thread, Darcy and her five friends go back to Alitheia. This time Colin Mackaby is missing and Darcy fears that he is in Alitheia or worse in Tselloch’s world. She asks Pateros to let them enter the gate early. Their adventure is not what they expected. Things are different since they left. The people in Alitheia are not happy with how things are. Nothing has really improved for them. They are turning on the monarchy and rioting to show their displeasure. The six arrive to a different homecoming. They are hidden as they arrive so those unhappy can’t attack them. So not only are things volatile around the castle, Tselloch is still out there getting stronger. He is taking advantage of the people’s unhappiness. He is trying to get through the enchantments surrounding the city and castles. He is looking for any weakness.

The six still are not ready to fulfill their destiny and plan to rescue YahtoVeli from the Oracle instead. This journey takes them to magical islands that are not on any map. The voyage is dangerous and they encounter new friends and enemies.

Darcy is also torn between her feelings for Perry, which have grown over the previous year, and Tellius. This causes problems of its own for Darcy. She must keep her feelings for Perry secret from Sam and continue to solve the Oracle’s message to save YahtoVeli. She has a lot of responsibility and finds that she alone must carry the burden of saving her friends.

These books keep getting better and better. I finish one and then immediately want to read the next one. I love how the author is developing Darcy’s character. You watch how she grows and changes. Its fun to read about their adventures and the relationships they have with each other and some of the other characters. The author pulls you in to each adventure and places the reader right in the middle of all the action. The reader is included in the story as if they are there to witness as it happens.

I give this book 5 out of 5
