Review : The Weight of Souls by Bryony Pearce (YA)

Book Blurb

Sixteen year old Taylor Oh is cursed: if she is touched by the ghost of a murder victim then they pass a mark beneath her skin. She has three weeks to find their murderer and pass the mark to them – letting justice take place and sending them into the Darkness. And if she doesn’t make it in time? The Darkness will come for her…

She spends her life trying to avoid ghosts, make it through school where she’s bullied by popular Justin and his cronies, keep her one remaining friend, and persuade her father that this is real and that she’s not going crazy.

But then Justin is murdered and everything gets a whole lot worse. Justin doesn’t know who killed him, so there’s no obvious person for Taylor to go after. The clues she has lead her to the V Club, a vicious secret society at her school where no one is allowed to leave… and where Justin was dared to do the stunt which led to his death.

Can she find out who was responsible for his murder before the Darkness comes for her? Can she put aside her hatred for her former bully to truly help him?

And what happens if she starts to fall for him?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Taylor Oh is not a typical high school student. She sees ghosts. In fact they seek her out. She is bound by a curse that affects her family line which was given by the Egyptian god of death. If a ghost of a murdered person touches her, she is marked. She has to find the person who murdered the ghost and transfer the mark. The person is then taken into the Darkness to be judged. Taylor must get rid of the mark or the Darkness will come for her.

She saw her first ghost at age ten and just like her mother had to learn what to do. Her mother trained her and read the story of her ancestor. Taylor memorized the story as her mother instructed. Her father didn’t believe in the curse and thought both mother and daughter had some kind of genetic disease.

Taylor could not tell her friends what was going on. Who would believe her? When even her own father didn’t believe it. So she made excuses and kept her secret. Pete grew frustrated with the one sidedness of their friendship and gave up. He no longer wanted to be her friend. Hannah was now her only friend.

In fact Taylor’s behavior was too strange at times and other kids made fun of her at school. The group of popular kids made it their mission to make her life at school horrible. This group now included her former best friend Pete. They were the least of her problems though. She was constantly on the look out for ghosts and on her own with her curse since her mother died in a car accident.

Her life was complicated. Her father was looking for a cure for her disease. He took blood samples from her constantly trying to figure out how to help her. She kept a vigil out for ghosts. She feared the Darkness and tried to avoid ghosts when she saw them. She didn’t want to be marked. She didn’t want to be cursed with this responsibility.

Her life becomes more complicated when the leader of the popular group, Justin, dies and marks her. He doesn’t know who murdered him. So Taylor has to find out who murdered him and give them the mark before the Darkness comes for her instead. So the race is on and she has to enter the folds of the ones who torture her daily to save herself and Justin.

Her journey leads her into many twists and turns full of surprises, fear and heartache. She fears that her time will run out and the Darkness will come for her. That is her worst nightmare and is she strong enough to defeat it.

I really liked this book. It was a very unique storyline and drew me in from the beginning. I felt for Taylor throughout the whole book. She had a lot to deal with by herself. She was a strong character and did what she had to do despite her fears. The adult characters were a bit to be desired though. Her father was frustrating to me when he didn’t believe her. His anger and frustration really stopped him from seeing what his daughter and wife dealt with. Then the principal at the school was horrible and allowed the students to bully her. The reader learns more about him later in the book, but it definitely mad me angry. An excellent story and a definite one to suggest to my students.

I give him a 5 out of 5
