Review : Love Overdue by Pamela Morsi (CR)

Book Blurb

Meet Dorothy Jarrow: devotedly unsexy librarian

Buttoned-up book lover DJ is all sensible shoes, drab skirts and studious glasses. After an ill-advised spring-break-fueled fling left her mortified, she's committed to her prim and proper look. When she's hired by a rural library in middle-of-nowhere Kansas, she finally has the lifestyle to match-and she can't wait to get her admin on.

But it's clear from day one that the small-town library is more interested in circulating rumors than books. DJ has to organize her unloved library, win over oddball employees and avoid her flamboyant landlady's attempts to set her up with the town pharmacist. Especially that last part-because it turns out handsome Scott Sanderson is her old vacation fling! She is not sure whether to be relieved or offended when he doesn't seem to recognize her. But with every meeting, DJ finds herself secretly wondering what it would be like to take off her glasses, unpin her bun and reveal the inner vixen she's been hiding from everyone-including herself.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

DJ has been hired for her dream job of town librarian in a small town in Kansas. She is very excited to start her new job and make this little town her permanent home. She and her dog Dew move in the apartment in Viv’s house. She is the head of the committee board that hired DJ for the library. Viv is a big part of the town and well known to everyone. She is the one to call when something happens to help. Of course DJ feels a bit hesitant living and becoming close friends with her boss, so to speak. She wants to appear professional and capable.

However, small towns are a different world than what she is used to. Life revolves around the wheat harvest and everyone’s business. She finds it a challenge to fit in as she is an outsider. Some people are hostile to her for that fact. Others find her fascinating and constantly want to talk to her. She can kiss her solitude and privacy good bye.

Then she comes face to face with someone she never expected to see again. One night long ago when she turned twenty-one, she had a wild night during spring break with her friends. She wanted to do something she would never normally do. She had a one night stand with a stranger. Years later she meets him again and he doesn’t remember her at all. She, of course, knows him instantly. She is horrified and angry. She doesn’t want him to remember but is upset that he doesn’t. DJ is completely conflicted and to top it off he is Viv’s son Scott. She can’t jeopardize her job. She decides to keep her distance and appear stand offish.

Little does DJ realize that her plan is easier said than done. In small towns it is virtually impossible to avoid someone totally and Viv is also scheming to get them together. So DJ is doomed to see Scott often. The more time she spends with him the more she likes him, but he has no clue who she is. She hopes he never remembers her most embarrassing night. Viv has a plan for the two of them and she is determined to see it through no matter how DJ feels. So let the adventure begin.

This book is full of awesome characters and small town life. I can relate being one who was raised in one and currently lives in one. This was a fun book to read as the author really was able to capture many aspects of a small town community and what the wheat harvest means. It made me laugh at points when I know some readers would ask themselves “do they really do that?”. The answer is yes they do.

DJ was a character I really had to warm up to a bit. I think her attitude toward Scott was a bit over the top. I think she was more ashamed at herself and took a lot of it out on Scott in the beginning. I pushed through thinking she would get better and, of course, I was rewarded. I would recommend this book for those who like things to come full circle.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 rating
