Review : The Darkest Craving by Gena Showalter (PNR)

Book Blurb

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter is back with a breathtaking Lords of the Underworld tale about a warrior trapped by darkness and the woman determined to save him

Having endured weeks of torture in the bowels of hell, Kane wants nothing to do with his beautiful rescuer, Josephina Aisling. The half-Fae female threatens to awaken the demon of Disaster inside him—a beast he’s determined to kill, no matter the price.

Josephina is hunted by a brutal enemy—her royal family—and Kane is her only source of protection. He’s also the only male to ever set her aflame, and even he succumbs to the heat. But as they navigate the treacherous world of the Fae, they are forced to make a choice: live apart…or die together.

Toot's Review

Ok so I don't know if I should admit this while trying to review this book but I have to admit it, I might have a book hangover because this book just can't be this bleh? I love me some Gena Showalter, although her last couple of books left me the same way *scratches head*, I just don't know.

The Darkest Craving is Kane's HEA. Kane is the Lord of the Underworld housing the demon Disaster. No matter where he goes, bad things happen, as in, he creates a disaster wherever he goes. In one of the more recent books in the series, Kane is dragged to hell. Yes, he eventually escapes with the help of a Fae, Josephina. Horrible things happened to Kane while in hell and he decides he's going to end his existence along with his demon. While saying his goodbyes, he decides to track down the Fae and fulfill a promise he made to her or try to convince her not to allow him to follow through with it. Her request was to have him kill her. When he does finally find her, she is on the run but Kane has brought her enemies to her door. She is eventually recaptured and dragged back to the home she fled from, wherein, she is treated like a servant and slave to her own family. She is also the literal "whipping boy" to her princess sister. Kane goes crazy at this knowledge as well as Disaster. Disaster knows this is the woman whom can end him and Disaster plots to bring her down, all the while Kane realizes she can be his salvation.

So with all this drama going on, why in the heck was I so bored? I honestly don't know unless, like I said, I had a previous book hangover but sadly, I don't think that was the case. The story jumps around so much that I seriously thought there were whole huge chunks missing from the book . I almost wanted to contact Amazon for a refund until I realized it was just the way the story was written. Gena skims over so much that I felt like the book was on a DVR. Certain parts are dragged out to ad nauseum and other are just glossed over. The flow is totally messed up in this book. Also, Kane has such a sorted, tragic past that unless you've read all the books and know his history, you will be left in the dark as to why he's in hell, why you should be sympathetic to him and/or what his past is generally all about. Gena left all his back-story out including his time in hell and it totally takes away from your empathy towards the character. He was supposedly raped repeatedly and tortured beyond measure in hell but yet, Gena chose to leave it all out, which I think in this case, dulls the reader to his suffering and doesn't give the reader the full impact of his redemption.

As for Josephina, when the book starts out, she's a very intriguing character. She's on the run and full of spunk but then all of a sudden, she's captured and turns into this sniveling twit. Oh poor me, I have a crappy family who enslaves me and this is my lot in life. The story literally turns into Cinderella. Reading it, I was like, REALLY....this is what it's come down to????? Also her bother is making passes at her! Just.....ew!!!! Oh man, I could just rant and rave about this book and how it just fell apart in my hands. It almost read like Gena wrote a ton of scenes and then tried to make them into a book.

The pieces of the story are basically Kane as the main story, we have some fun with Cameo as well as a possible love interest for her and we have Torin....ah Torin....it will happen, one day. Oh and William, who is the saving grace in the book and might I say, is in his best man-whore form. We also get some fun appearances by the rest of the Lords and a kick-ass wedding scene.

All in all, I was disappointed in this book but I won't give up on Gena!

2 out of 5 books
Although I could go maybe 2 1/2
It didn't completely suck!
