Book Blurb

Some zombies are raised. Others must be put down. Just ask Anita Blake.

Before now, she would have considered them merely off-putting, never dangerous. Before now, she had never heard of any of them causing human beings to perish in agony. But that’s all changed.

Micah’s estranged father lies dying, rotting away inside from some strange ailment that has his doctors whispering about “zombie disease.”

Anita makes her living off of zombies—but these aren’t the kind she knows so well. These creatures hunt in daylight, and are as fast and strong as vampires. If they bite you, you become just like them. And round and round it goes…

Where will it stop?
Even Anita Blake doesn’t know.

Toot's Book Review
Anita's Back! Affliction is her newest adventure and marks Laurell K Hamilton and Anita's 20th anniversary. Of course when you have such a milestone, you pull out all the stops!
Affliction is a wonderful addition to the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series by Laurell K Hamilton. All your favorite characters are back except Richard, uggggg Richard! Anywho this book starts with Micah and his family having a bit of a crisis that involves Micah having to go home and face his family whom he abandoned to keep safe from Chimera's wrath but has never mended that proverbial fence. He also will have to explain his new lifestyle to them as well and being from the south, it might not be well received. To add to all this emotional upheaval, it turns out, his dad was attacked by a Zombie but not any Zombie, a rotter, whom has now contaminated Micah's dad and whom better to solve this mystery then our own Anita Blake.
To add to all this drama is her ongoing battle with law enforcement, her lifestyle, her BFF *wink, wink* yep he's back, all her metaphysical crap, her animals and a whole host of other issues added to the pot to make the wonderful story a fabulous addition to the Anita Blake series.
As you can tell, I'm still a fan after all these years. Guilty Pleasures (book #1) was the book that brought back my love of reading after being on hiatus and for that, I'll always be grateful. So after 20 years and 22 books later, what are my thoughts on the book? Well, I thought it felt like a very natural addition to LKH's recent works and how she writes lately. It didn't have the flavor of the older books but definitely more in the vein of her more recent ones. I did find however, that there were parts that seemed very familiar from books in the past. The Micah situation was reminiscent of Blood Noire and Jason's family issues, The baddie was one we've seen in the past and was ended just as quickly as say, Mommy Dark (for fans, you'll know what I mean. I don't want to spoil too much), Some of the hospital parts reminded me of Obsidian Butterfly as well as another famous morgue scene from her earlier books. It almost felt like a new story that made you remember bits and pieces from old books and old cases. I kind of liked it for an anniversary edition (if that was the point)?
Some of my critique would be, she spewed a ton of history and after 20 years, there was a lot. Some things and dialogue seemed to be repetitive, not sure if it was editing issues or what but it was almost like double talk. Parts became a bit preachy and the interaction with the other cops was predictable. You knew there would be a good cop and bad cop and the others would be on the fence about her and her lifestyle, men and work ethics until she proved herself, then all was forgiven. There was even the female cop with the classic "Anita" issues of her giving a bad name to women everywhere, which was also in past books.
Other than that, I loved reading about all the guys again and playing catch up, although the timeline seemed to be a bit off. I thought more time had passed in Anita's world then what was brought up by her. I also loved seeing more of the Wares, Vamps and Zombies. Micah's family was fabulous, Anita's BFF was in classic form, her sex life sizzles as well as her playtime and OMG, I can't believe the body count! My heart broke again (I still miss Haven)! With all that spoiler-ish, nonsensical, mumbo-jumbo I tried to skirt around. I think fans will like it. You can read it as a standalone (Laurell does a fab job at keeping you up-to-date, although there's so much history, it might boggle your mind a bit). I still miss Richard but Nathanial makes up for a lot *grin*.

I'm giving her 4 out of 5 because of fandom
but for standalone, 3 out of 5
