Review : Eyes Ever to the Sky by Katie French (PNR)

Book Blurb

When Hugh wakes up in a smoldering crater—no memory, no clothes—a single thought echoes in his head…trust no one. Frightened and alone, with no memory of who he is, he stumbles upon a grisly murder scene and is fatally shot. He wakes, only to find he can heal himself. He has superpowers, and he’s going to need them.

Desperate and bleeding, Hugh stumbles upon fifteen-year-old Cece, who’s got enough troubles of her own. Between caring for her bipolar mother and trying not to get evicted from her run-down trailer, Cece may be the only person struggling as much as Hugh. Drawn to Hugh, Cece finds a love she’s never known. But when the real killer—a man-hunting beast—chooses another victim, Hugh and Cece realize they must unlock the clues to their past if they have any chance at a future.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This YA story is a sci-fi romance that includes boys with super powers and aliens. It also centers around Cecelia who lives with her mother.  Her mother is bi-polar where she suffers from manic episodes.  Cece has taken care of her mother for the last couple of years, where they live in a trailer filled to the brim with everything her mother hoards.  Cece has taken a job to bring in money since her mother is unable to do so.  One night working at the ice cream shop, she meets Hugh.  In fact she throws the trash on top of him.  He is inside the dumpster looking for food.  Hugh doesn’t remember who he is or where he is from.  Cece decides to help him figure out who he is.  She takes him home to give him food and a place to stay.
Brutal murders are happening around town, and Hugh is being pointed out as the suspect.  Hugh claims he is innocent, in which Cece believes him.  Someone or something is stalking the people of her town.  Her mother, then, disappears during one of her manic episodes and Hugh stays around Cece to keep her safe.
Hugh figures out that he is special and has abilities that no one else has.  His memory eludes him and he has no idea why he can do what he does.  He falls for Cece and intends her to protect her from the monster that is killing people.  However, they meet someone who knows about Hugh’s identity and have to fight for their lives.

This book was divided up and written according to Cece’s point of view and then Hugh’s point of view.  It switched back and forth giving the reader a good idea about how Cece felt about events dealing with her mother, Hugh, work, and her best friend Fer.  It also gave insight into what Hugh thought and remembered.

Unfortunately there was a lot going on in this story.  I felt that it was a bit much for the reader grasp.  There were some areas of the story that were a bit confusing.  I think a bit more about the rift in Cece’s family would have been good.  It was mentioned so fast and then instantly fixed, I was wondering what the real story was.  The story was an interesting one, but I felt the author could have spent more time laying more of a foundation for the story.

I would give it a 3 out of 5
