Toot's Review
*wiping tears from keyboard and swiping under my eyes* Wow, I just finished Collision Course by S. C. Stephens and not to sound cliché but OMG this book basically crashed into my soul ......but let me back up a bit. About a week ago I finished S. C. Stephens Thoughtless, Effortless and Reckless Series and decided to immediately read another book she wrote that I thought would interest me called Collision Course. It’s apparently going to be a trilogy as well but so far there’s only the one book in the series. I picked it up last night, read through most of the night, picked it up again this morning and didn't put it down until it was finished, all the while, balling like a baby! I don’t think any form of media has quiet wrecked me as much since The Color Purple. I've read a lot of books and it’s rare that I get so torn up over one. I might shed a few tears over a character death or a heartfelt scene but other than that, the story moves on. This book grabs you from the beginning, breaks your heart, then slowly repairs it along with the character but all the while, you’re so engrossed in the story that you literally go through all the emotions with the main character. I’m not sure how S. C. Stephens does it and I’m not sure what just happened to me but I feel really moved by this book. Maybe it was just timing or just fabulous writing but if you've ever read a book that deeply affected you, this one is mine and I totally wasn't expecting it.
So now you're saying to yourself, OK Toot’s, you’re moved by the book but what the freak is
it about? Well, if the blurb above isn't enough, let me give you a little
synopsis.
Lucas is a teen with a bright future. He’s in line to be the
quarterback in his high school football team, he’s very popular and has a
loving mom but most of all, he has the best girlfriend and two BFF’s in the
whole world. They are like the 4 musketeers, more family then friends. One fateful night, the four friends attend a
party where everyone but Lucas gets drunk. Like any responsible drinking teens,
Lucas is the designated driver because he's not much of a drinker anyways. When his friends have a little too much to drink, he takes the keys and proceeds
to try to get them home safely but as luck would have it, there’s a flash storm and as
Lucas is driving and chatting with his buds, the car hydroplanes and they careen
off a cliff. Lucas is the only survivor.
Fast forward 3 months. Lucas is not doing so hot. He's in a major depression with survivors guilt gnawing at him. He has started living in his dreams because he can still visit with his friends and now, Lucas is forced to go back to the same school where he was king without his friends and he'll have to haunt the same halls that hold so many memories that even thinking about them causes panic attacks .He keeps telling himself that going back to school, will help him but what he doesn't know is that his self-induced exile after the accident and refusal to talk about what actually happened has had repercussions. Even though he was cleared of all charges, everyone thinks that Lucas was drunk and forced his friends into the car, there by maliciously causing their death. Lucas is so swamped with grief that he never tries to set the story straight and now he’s overwhelmed with rumors, evil looks, people who want revenge and no one, at this point, even cares what the truth is or what he might say. To the whole town, except for a few, all believe he killed his friends by being a drunken idiot and they are bound and determined to take their own grief out of him. When Lucas thinks all is lost, he finds an unlikely Angel in another outcast whom just by association is being dragged into this downward spiral. Will she help save him or will he be responsible for another person's misery?
