Review : Manataka by Ella J. Phoenix

Book Blurb

Since she was a child, Chloe has endured horrible nightmares about a Native American prince living in a time long forgotten. She never understood why, until she finds a stone that matches the one in her dreams. It has unimaginable powers, powers Chloe doesn’t understand. Fueled by memories of someone else’s past, she sets off on a wild quest for the stone’s birth place, hoping to also find answers to her foreboding dreams.

On the outside, Mason Green looks like a hard working, self-made millionaire, with too busy a life for romance. Very few people know the real reason for his self-imposed seclusion. It’s safer that way. But when a sexy historian shows him a supernatural stone from a forgotten tribe, Mason is intrigued - maybe the relic is the salvation he’s been waiting for. Ignoring the irrational attraction that threatens to crack the cask around his heart, Mason agrees to help Chloe.

As their wild quest becomes a dangerous mission, they must find the relic’s birthplace before Mason’s past catches up to them.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

I found the theme of this book to be very intriguing.  The story begins with an ancient Indian tribe and centers around a young woman named Adsila.  Then it jumps to present day and introduces the reader to Chloe, the main character.  She is an expert in Native American history and works in the Archives Department at the Smithsonian.  One day when unpacking items from the archives, she finds a stone which interests her and even appears familiar.  However, she is unsure what it is, even more so when it lights up showing symbols on the stone.  The dreams she has had all her life about an ancient Native tribe and the stone start her on the adventure of her life.  In her journey to find the legendary Manataka, Chloe meets Mason, who is much more than he seems.  He is right in the middle unbeknownst to Chloe and knows more about the stone then he lets on.  This story is fascinating with Native American history mixed with the myths, legends, and magic.  Paranormal is my favorite and this is such a refreshing twist from what I have read in the past.  The author weaves a great story in the present with the past emerging in visions and dreams which give the reader the clues and backstory.  The characters are a fun mix and I enjoyed getting to know them.  The interactions between Chloe and Mason were humorous and sweet.  I would recommend this book to anyone. I give kudos to Ms. Phoenix for a unique story.
