Toot's Review
So I decided to read Jamie Mcguire's Beautiful Disaster book
before reading her follow up book Walking Disaster. I had no idea what to
expect but I had heard a lot about both books, so I jumped right in without
doing any research on the books. I soon realized a few things, Beautiful
Disaster is a CR/NA book from the main Heroine's POV and Walking Disaster is
the exact same story but from the Hero's POV. My first piece of advice, buy
them both because if you just read one, the story is incomplete!
The basic story is about a girl, Abby, who's moved to a new
town, started at college with her BFF, America, in tow and she's hiding a huge
secret. One night, Abby and America decide to go see an underground fight in a
floating ring. While witnessing the fight, she notices one of the fighters,
Travis, and immediately is transfixed by
him. When the fight ends, he happens to pass by her and stops, exchanges a few
words with her and moves on. Little does she know, he's the roommate of
America's new boyfriend and is also the local ladies man. Travis is notorious
for being the "love em' and leave em' " type. When Abby finds this
out, she is bound and determined not to be on his long, long list of conquests and
decides, if she has to be around him, friendship is the only option. The two
embark on a very comfy friendship from then on out but everyone is totally
convinced there's more going on with the two but like all small school
campuses, rumors run amuck, reputation is perception and Abby may not be able
to handle the spotlight shown on her.
Travis has also met his match! He has never had to work to
stay in anyone's good graces, let alone have a female friend. He loves the idea
of having a female friend, someone who doesn't want to sleep with him and will
just get to know the real him but he can't stop thinking about her in very un"friend"ly
terms. He doesn't know what it is about her but she's his, damn it but how does
he convince her that they need to be more then friends? How does he make her
see that he can change and doesn't want anyone else but her? How does he become
worthy of her?
Soooooooo let me say this, I couldn't put the freakin' book
down! Like a cheezy soap opera addict, I needed to know what was happening
next! Then I'd turn the page and.....OMG, NO!! Turn the page.....awwwwww! Yep
it was an all-nighter to be sure! After reading the first book, Beautiful
Disaster, I loved the story and it was written well but what I didn't like were
the holes in the story. Granted, it's from a characters POV, so of course
you're only seeing one side of the story but there were time gaps as well, that
I thought were probably either scenes that had been deleted or the author just
needed to move the story along. Normally I'm all for moving a story along but
where there is months missing, it gets a bit frustrating because you know stuff
was happening, it just didn't make it to paper. Other than that, I also didn't
like the ending, it just sort of dropped off but then comes Walking Disaster,
her newest release and this one is the same story but from Travis's POV. This
one I had hoped would fill in the missing time and it did up to a point but
there were still some gaps. What I did find odd was how my perception of the
characters changed, which I knew might happen but to this degree was odd. In
BD, Abby comes off very normal and Travis comes off as a total lunatic. In WD,
the opposite happens, you had way more empathy for Travis and what he was going
though with Abby being totally wishy-washy and acting like a crazy person and
the ending to WD is way more satisfying to the story as a whole.
All in all, totally add these books to your CR/NA reading
pile. Yes it's just as steamy as any normal CR with a refreshing twist. Totally
diggin' these books!
