with Colten, quickly morphs into heartache when she suspects that something
sinister lurks beneath this movie star’s glitter and fame. Suddenly, Phoebe’s
caught in a mesh of lies, betrayals, and danger where she doesn’t know who to
trust, and needs to rely on herself—and her secret power—to get to the truth
and to stay alive.

Book Excerpt
A loud, echoing crack quickened Phoebe’s pace as lightning slashed the indigo sky above her. She had barely reached the base of the hill when rain began pounding down. Clutching the camera that hung from the strap around her neck, she sprinted the final stretch, arriving breathless.
Phoebe wiped the rain from her face, and then entered the chapel. Inside, light from moon-facing windows cast a misty glow across the sanctuary, the air redolent with the smoke of a blazing fireplace. She glanced around the heart of the nondenominational Green Lane Academy. It seemed so ordinary, so quiet, even peaceful. Rows of pews with velvet cushions ran the width of the room. She moved between them, taking care to remain in the shadows. An irregular shape in a dark corner caught her eye and Phoebe could just barely make out the outline of the boy. He knelt with his head between his hands, his body huddled against a pew. Praying.
Phoebe paused several feet away and waited. After a moment she felt energy seeping from the boy’s skin, raising the hairs on hers. Cold and electric, it meant one thing: the boy had only one heart. She couldn’t risk him seeing what she had come there to do. That meant waiting. Just then, something stirred behind her.

Tell us about your family.
My
mom's human and my father was a Shaper - a race of shape-shifter. That's what
makes me a Hypha (half human, half shape-shifter). I'm an only child and I live
with my maternal grandfather when I'm not at boarding school.

What was the scariest moment of your life?
The
night I was tortured. . . I really don't want to talk about it right now. I
hope that's okay. . . .

What is your favorite meal?
A
hot bowl of soup – lentil or tomato - with a big salad and a scone on the side.

Do you play any sports?
I'm
allergic to sports - well, at least the ones that involve moving balls.

What do you do to unwind and relax?
I
take early morning photographs. I enjoy watching the rest of the world wake up.

Who should play you in a film?
I'm
tall so I'm not sure. But if my story got turned into a major film, I'd love a
newbie to play me. It would be awesome to have my movie be someone's big break!

three quotes from authors of books she loves.

trailer! I hope your wonderful readers enjoy watching it.
I love inspiring quotes. When designing my new website, I
decided to dedicate a section to some of my favorite quotes from authors. I
thought it would be fun to highlight a few of them and tell you why they spoke
to me.

know what it is that sometimes comes to make our books alive. All we can do is
to write dutifully and day after day, every day, giving our work the very best
of what we are capable. I don’t think that we can consciously put the magic in;

I really savor the moment when a great idea falls into my
lap. Sometimes I wish they would fall like a hail storm. But I probably
wouldn't appreciate them as much if they did. There's nothing like writing and
getting that oh-my-God-this-is-working feeling. And I know that feeling only
registers on the "magical moment radar" because of all of the
agonizing what-the-hell-am-I-doing hours that came before it. So when that gift
comes, I accept it gratefully.

Can you imagine creating something - a book, a song, a
movement - that hits that magical tipping point? We're all creators. And I
think we should try to imagine our own personal tipping point. I say
"personal tipping point" because it doesn't have to be grand (unless
that's what you want). It could simply be that moment when someone other than a
friend, or a relative, buys your book or your painting. That moment could very
well be the spark that creates the wildfire!
We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes
a master.

This quote from Hemingway has given me a sense of ease. We
all strive to do the best we can with whatever talents we have. Some are innate
and others are acquired along the way. The fact that a Nobel Prize winner in
literature, considered himself an apprentice—and not a master—in his craft,
gives me permission to just enjoy the creative process. This thing called
writing is dynamic and will continue to evolve. At this moment in time, I'm
grateful for the opportunity to be an apprentice.

Nya Jade is a singer-songwriter and author based in San Francisco.
Her music videos have aired on the VH1, BET, and MTV networks. USA Today hailed
Nya as a “young female troubadour worth keeping your eyes and ears on,” in an
entertainment feature on up-and-coming singer-songwriters. “Her cool singing
voice recalls Sade,” said the LA Times.
Between writing and performing
new music, Nya took a musical sabbatical to focus on writing a novel—an endeavor
she found quite daunting, until she began looking at each chapter as a verse in
a very long song. Phoebe Pope and the Year of Four is her first novel.
In
her free time, Nya enjoys hanging out with family and friends, searching for
amazing gluten-free desserts, and bargain hunting for her next pair of funky
shoes.
Nya holds a B.A. in Economics and an M.A. in Sociology, both from
Stanford University.
