Review : Lover At Last by J.R. Ward (PNR)

Book Blurb

Qhuinn, son of no one, is used to being on his own. Disavowed from his bloodline, shunned by the aristocracy, he has finally found an identity as one of the most brutal fighters in the war against the Lessening Society. But his life is not complete. Even as the prospect of having a family of his own seems to be within reach, he is empty on the inside, his heart given to another....

Blay, after years of unrequited love, has moved on from his feelings for Qhuinn. And it’s about time: The male has found his perfect match in a Chosen female, and they are going to have a young—just as Qhuinn has always wanted for himself. It’s hard to see the new couple together, but building your life around a pipe dream is just a heartbreak waiting to happen. As he’s learned firsthand.

Fate seems to have taken these vampire soldiers in different directions... but as the battle over the race’s throne intensifies, and new players on the scene in Caldwell create mortal danger for the Brotherhood, Qhuinn finally learns the true definition of courage, and two hearts who are meant to be together... finally become one.

Toot's Review

Note: So have you ever read a book that made your mind do flip flops that you can't even concentrate afterwards? That you have a book hangover of sorts? Yeah now, try to not only review it but then explain it as well. This is probably my weirdest review but like the books in this series, it has a vocabulary all its own but somehow works.
Enjoy!

OMG so where do I begin!!! Do I tell you, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!!! Do I say....freakin' finally?!?!?! Do I make a political statement or simply say, this is one of the best M/M romances on the market.....without a doubt?!?!?! How about, In my opinion, this book is also totally ground breaking and bringing the M/M subject into mainstream popularity at a really pivotal time for the lifestyle rights.....hellz yes?!?!?!! Hmmmmmm, should I also tell you, I laughed out loud, cried, had my heart melt, gasped, had to leave the room because I was so excited I thought people would think I had booked a ticket for the crazy train, got worried for realz at parts and completely and utterly went.......awwwwwwww?!?!?! Yep, I totally could tell you all that and more but mostly what I want to say is this.....Not only is this an EPIC, earth shattering, ground breaking, awesome PNR read but it's also a wonderful HEA. No matter the subject, if you love romance, vamps, cool lingo and just plain awesomeness all around, you will absolutely love this book and I promise, I will try not to spoil it in the synopsis for you but this is one that I do need to provide you with some background and I'll do my darnedest to not ruin it.

So if you don't know, this is the story of Qhuinn and Blay. It is J.R. Ward's first Male/Male romance for the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. It has been hugely anticipated by fans all over the world, not because of the M/M aspect, although that might be it for some but I think mainly it's because these two characters have been in the books from the early beginnings of the series and we all knew they needed a HEA and after all these years, finally, finally got it!

So where do I begin? How do I do a synopsis for characters who've been together their entire lives. Who are the very best of friends and have been through the darkest of times together? How do I tell you about a friendship so deep, that not only did they share pizza and soda together but also fought alongside of each other, went through boot camp together, shared secrets, horrors,  and even women. So deep was that friendship, that one day, the friendship of one, turned into true love and for the other, even though he knew, his mind said it was always going to remain squarely in the friendship column and not lover. And because of that line in the sand, the true and deep friendship became strained and then torn apart, so that friends became enemies, love became hatred and the true and deep friendship was broken. So much so, that when the friendship was broken, it broke them both until one sought solace in the arms of another and the other continued down a path he knew was wrong, not only in his heart but in his mind until he was nearly crazed from it. Yea, so this is that story *grin*.

Poetry aside, both men go on a journey. As a fan, Blay was always the level headed one and Qhuinn was the wild child but through this book, you'll see that, at times, the roles reverse and what you thought you knew about these two will totally be up-ended. Like all of J.R. Wards books, the eventual couple goes through major growing pains till they reach a point that they can come together in a happy and healthy relationship. With all of her books, it's the pains of the journey that the true payoff for the reader comes when they eventually get together and this book is no exception.

Are there a few things that bugged me, yes but do I care, no...not really. I would have liked more of the mating ceremony. There are 4 other major threads going on. Layla and Xcor, Trez and I.Am, Assail and Marisol, aaaannnnnddddddd Luchas! The only story out of the 4 that I enjoyed was Luchas's but, and it's a big BUT, this is how J.R. Ward writes. She sprinkles multiple small story threads throughout her books and then eventually the characters grow enough to get their own book. In Lover At Last, she is planting the seeds for future books. So just be aware of that.

Totally not saying more. If you can't tell, I loved the book and would recommend it and the whole freakin' series to all.

5 out of 5 books!!!!
