Toot's Review

Indigo Spell is the 3rd book in Richelle Mead's BloodlinesSeries for YA readers. It's an offshoot of her popular Vampire Academy Series which is in the process of being made into a movie. The Bloodlines Series follows characters from the original VA Series. The main heroine and story POV is Sydney Sage, The Alchemist, who is charged with the assignment of keeping the new princess, Jill, in hiding and protect her while they hide her in a Palm Springs, CA high school named Amberwood Prep. Sydney is also joined by Eddie, the muscle,  and Adrian, the flirty playboy, who's nursing a broken heart after all that happened in the VA Series. There are also a few others who've followed along but this story is more about Sydney finding her place in her supernatural world and finding love.
You see, a huge part of who Sydney is, is the fact that she is an Alchemist. Being an Alchemist means that she not only uses science to help rid the world of evil but it's also a bit of a cult. The members all believe that the supernatural's of the world are evil and it is the Alchemist's job to protect the human race. To denote she's an Alchemist, she has a gold tattoo on her cheek which also has numerous spells woven into it as well.  Unfortunately for the Alchemist, some of the spells means they are also beholden to the Vampires. When Sydney first shows up in the VA books and even into the Bloodlines Series, she have a very strong distain for all things magic or supernatural . Richelle Mead has written Sydney as definitely being bigoted against the entire supernatural world and only humans are good enough. As the series progresses, Sydney forms strong friendships with some of the said supernatural's and starts to question everything she's been taught all her life to believe in.
Indigo Spell is the book that tips the scales (so to speak) for her. At the end of the last book The Golden Lily, sparks fly between Sydney and Adrian. She also has learned of someone named Marcus Finch who supposedly broke the Golden Lily tattoo's spells and she wants to know if it's true. In Indigo Spell, she finds Marcus Finch, finds out about a huge Alchemist conspiracy and finally admits, she's fallen in love with Adrian, who's also fallen in love deeply with her.
The story was a great addition and natural progression to the entire series. I was definitely happy with the growing tension between Adrian and Sydney and loved the final payoff to their coming together as a couple. Sydney's mysterious missing Alchemist Marcus Finch also adds some nice tension to the Sydney/Adrian tug and pull but also opens the doors to the unknown conspiracy. Basically the story has all the things you want from a good YA book, a good mystery, a bit of high school drama, teen angst with a bit of romance and cute guys sprinkled in.
All in all if you're a fan of the series, I think you'll really enjoy this addition.

She received a liberal arts degree from the University of Michigan, an MA in Comparative Religion from Western Michigan University, and a Master in Teaching (Middle & High School English) degree from the University of Washington. Richelle's Dark Swan Series (Storm Born and Thorn Queen) follows Eugenie Markham, a free-lance shaman who battles ghosts and fey that sneak into our world from the Otherworld. When an alarming prophecy suddenly makes her every Otherworldly creature's object of desire, Eugenie must dodge their advances while also fighting a dark power rising within her.

Richelle's YA series, Vampire Academy, is published by Razorbill Books (Penguin) and thus far contains Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise, and Spirit Bound. This New York Times and USA Todaybestselling series has won honors from the American Library Association and been translated into 30 languages.
