This is the second book in The Blackstone Affair and I never read the first, so this review is based wholly on what I've read. The entire book, first and foremost is from the character Ethan Blackstone's POV, which was actually kind of fun because we really get into his head. The book starts off right after his girlfriend Brynne dumped his butt. He must be totally smitten with her because he basically spirals quiet quickly into a depression of sorts. His whole focus is on how to win her back and when he should put his plan in motion. Ethan is all about planning. He's ex-military and he's a professional poker player as well as owning his own business in the personal protection and security industry. He's also a total Alpha Male and control freak.
So the history from the back story given in the books is that one of Ethan's friends asked him to keep an eye on his daughter (Brynne) and when he met her, he fell in love but never told her about the connection to her father and that is what broke them up. Now that he's a mess, he's vowed to get her back, some way, some how.
I did actually really enjoy this book and gobbled it up in 2 days. It's definitely a contemporary romance and definitely a second book in a trilogy but I had no problem following it as a stand alone. I totally had a great time in Ethan's head as he tried to mend their relationship, struggle with bouts of jealousy and tackle not only her past but his as well but there were some really disturbing things I found while traipsing through Ethan's head as the reader. Without having read the first book, I found the character a bit disturbing in his obsession with Brynne. He has fixated his whole world around her and is only happy when he has total control of the situation and their relationship. This story does fancy more of the BDSM bedroom play, in a Fifty Shades of Gray kinda way but even more to the male extreme. I'm not sure if the author wanted to show us how Ethan can't function without Brynne but in know way is this a healthy relationship but hey, what couples in CR/Erotica books are *grin*. Anyways, I think it was a good second book and I will be looking forward to the third. Recommended if you're looking for something along the lines of Fifty Shades from a male POV.
