Cold Days: The Dresden Files #14 by Jim Butcher (UF)

Blurb from jimbutcher.com
HARRY DRESDEN LIVES!!!
After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn’t all that bad. Because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard.
He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long. And now, her word is his command, no matter what she wants him to do, no matter where she wants him to go, and no matter who she wants him to kill.
Guess which Mab wants first?
Of course, it won’t be an ordinary, everyday assassination. Mab wants her newest minion to pull off the impossible: kill an immortal. No problem there, right? And to make matters worse, there exists a growing threat to an unfathomable source of magic that could land Harry in the sort of trouble that will make death look like a holiday.
Beset by enemies new and old, Harry must gather his friends and allies, prevent the annihilation of countless innocents, and find a way out of his eternal subservience before his newfound powers claim the only thing he has left to call his own…
His soul.

Cold Days: A Novel of the Dresden Files

Wow, is about all I can say about Jim Butcher's Cold Days.  The blurb above says that "Harry Dresden Lives!!!" but I'd argue that it should be more like "Harry Dresden is back!".  After the last book, Ghost Story, I was a little worried that Jim Butcher was getting tired of writing Harry Dresden. I know sometimes authors can grow to resent their characters (a famous example is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes) and as a fan of the series, I was really hoping that wasn't the case. I do have to admit that when I heard about Cold Days coming out, I was definitely leery about reading it because there's nothing I hate more than when a beloved series starts going downhill *eyes The Southern Vampire Series 'nope not going there'* but after reading (actually I listened to the audiobook) Cold Days, I've totally changed my tune! Cold Days is definitely a throwback to some of the original Dresden books that were so fun, full of action and destruction with whip smart wit that nothing else compared and it's what made Harry Dresden, Harry Dresden.  Cold Days brings back the Harry Dresden of old along with his entire Scooby gang. Everyone comes to help Harry without missing a beat.
I won't go into a summery because the book is so freakin' long and so much is happening that I can't really wrap my mind around it all but I will say this.......GET THE AUDIOBOOK! If for no other reason than JamesMarsters is back as the narrator. For those that don't know who he is, he played Spike in the TV series Buffy. He has narrated all the books in the series except for Ghost Story (the last book) and does a fabulous job! He is Harry!!! I also recommend the audiobook because the written book is 528 pages according to Amazon.com and the audiobook was roughly 19 hours, holy cow!
Anywho, if you're a fan of the series, never fear, you'll love it! If you've never read the Dresden Files, you might want to read the series first, I'm not sure how this would be as a standalone book. There's lots of story threads that are woven into the main plot of Cold Days that are pulled from as far back as the 3rd book in the series, Grave Peril. All in all, it's a definite "Don't Miss" for Harry Dresden fans!

5 out of 5 books!
