Review : Dark Nights By Christine Feehan (PNR)

Blurb from christinefeehan.com:

DARK DREAM Book #7 in Dark Series Previously in After Twilight & Dark Dreamers

She’s known him since she was fifteen. Every night, he is with her: his face, his voice. Tonight, Sara Marten will meet the man who is both angel and demon, salvation and temptation: Falcon—the Carpathian, the banished hero. Tonight, Sara will meet the dark-eyed destroyer destined to be her mate..

DARK DESCENT Book #11 in Dark Series Previously in The Only One

In this version of Dark Descent there is an additional hundred pages. I rewrote it from the original version as I felt it was too short. I do not plan on doing this for the other re-prints, but I hope you enjoy the newest version of Dark Descent.

In a cave of mystery and wonder deep in the Carpathian Mountains , bodyguard Joie Sanders encounters a most remarkable being. Proud, strong, immortal, he is called Traian an ageless hunter, locked in a life and death battle with enemy vampires and he will be her salvation in a labyrinth protected by the ingenious traps of a mysterious ancient race. What awaits them in the darkness is not known, and each step could be their last as their destined path leads them toward a fiery passion that will illuminate the perilous dark night.

Dark Nights

To start with, I listened to this on audiobook and I'm not sure if I'd recommend that version for this book. The narrator does not separate the chapters while reading, so it seems as if the action is skipping around a lot until you realize that it was probably a chapter break. Also the narrator makes Traian sound like the classic Transylvanian vampire (muahahaha I vanna suck ya blood). It kinda threw me out of the story at times.

On that note, on to the review.....

First up in the audiobook was Dark Descent. According to Christine Feehan she added an additional hundred pages to the original novella but honestly I couldn't find where they were inserted, it seemed that seamless. I remember reading the original story about a year ago (that's why I opted for the audiobook this time around) and I didn't notice a huge difference in the overall story. If you're a fan of the Dark books, I think you'll love this revisit. It's still a really nice addition to the series.

As a side note: if you're going to read her newest book Dark Storm, I would definitely recommend reading this story first. In Dark Storm the secondary characters are Jubal and Gary. In Dark Descent We meet Jubal for the first time and get to know this character's history. Gary we met way back in Dark Magic but it's nice seeing the story of how they met for the first time as well and you can see how they could become such fast friends. So needless to say, Dark Storm will make more sense if you've read this story first. Besides that, It was action-packed and basically followed in the same vein of all the other Dark stories. Again, if you like the series, I think you'll like the revamped version of this story. As a stand alone novella, I'm not sure if I'd recommend it as your first foray into Christine Feehan's Carpathians. The Carpathians can be a big supernatural pill to swallow, if not eased into it. On it's own, I'd give it 3 1/2 stars.

Last but not least is Dark Dream. It's the story of Falcon and Sara. I read this story originally awhile ago as well and it is still one of my favorites. The bonus this time was the prologue of Dark Dream. We finally get to read the story that started it all. The prologue is about how Prince Vladimir made the hard decision to send the warriors to all corners of the world. How he asked for volunteers to basically live alone, fighting vampires as long as they can, knowing that when they couldn't fight any longer they would have to commit suicide or become vampires themselves. It was a beautiful and heartrending beginning that is a pivotal moment in Christine Feehan's Dark series but we as readers previously weren't given the details, just told about the occurrence, so this was a nice treat. As for the story itself, Falcon has decided his time for fighting the vampires is at an end and is on his way back home to the Carpathian people to meet the new Prince before he meets the sun and ends his existence. Along his trip home he meets a dark angel, sort of a vigilante of sorts whom is in possession of an old journal. That journal it turns out is one that Falcon wrote centuries ago when he realized he would never meet his lifemate. He had hoped that she would find it one day and at least be able to know him in some small way and maybe they could meet in the next life. It really is a sweet story, full of romance and possibilities. Definitely a must read, if you're a fan of the series.

I would rate this story a 4 1/2 on it's own.
