Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet By Darynda Jones (PNR/UF)

Blurb from darynda.com
The fourth in this fun and sexy New York Times bestselling paranormal series: “If you enjoy Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum, you will certainly enjoy Charley Davidson!” —Suspense Magazine
Sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it. In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.

Have I told you all how much I love this series? No? Well I do totally love this series. I think I love this series as much as I love chocolate, ummmm or maybe coffee??? If you haven't read this series, it's never too late. We're only on the 4th book, so you can easily catch up. Ok, enough gushing and on to my review.

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

The book picks up 2 month after the last book. We find that unlike most UF/PNR heroine's, Charley is not bouncing back from her last ordeal and is dealing with it badly. She has literally locked herself away in her apartment and has become a home shopping junkie until Cookie steps in and rescues her BFF and boss. Charley has totally been ignoring everyone in her life and trying not to deal with what happened to her and Cookie is done with watching her friend make them both broke. While trying to figure out how to earn money again, Charley takes a very mysterious case with an even mysterious client. To help solve the case, she is going to need her whole Scooby gang again but she is also going to have to mend some relationships, do some forgiving and figure out where her heart lies, all while getting into even more trouble.

This is definitely a lot darker book then the others, probably because Charley is in a bad place when we meet up with her again. I love the way Darynda writes Charley, you can totally feel her pain and betrayal (you know torture, almost dying, being stabbed in the back by your loved ones) but it's done with such sarcasm and humor, you just get totally sucked back into the world. You literally feel like you're on the couch watching the home shopping channel drowning your pain and sorrow along with her. You want to kick Reyes's butt, shake her father and ask "What is wrong with you!" and buy some shiny bobbles. Now don't get me wrong, the whole book isn't about Charley's depression, only the first couple chapters. The rest is what we expect and love from the Charley Davidson series. Charley doing her investigations, Charley dealing with ghosts, Charley dealing with her crazy family and *huge sigh* Reyes. This book definitely heats things up between Charley and Reyes. It gets so hot, you might singe your book, seriously! Also to mix things up, Donovan and the gang make an appearance as well. Boy do they make some trouble but as always, in their roguish way. All in all, if you love the series, this is a great addition for newbies and fans alike. It ties up loose ends, has romance, moments that tear at your heart strings, things you won't ever see coming and as aways, oozes sarcasm with a side of ADD. Definitely a must for anyone and everyone.

5 out of 5 books!
