Totally contains spoilers in my review!!!
Blurb from J.R. Ward's site:After reporter Mels Carmichael hits a disheveled man with her car outside the local cemetery, she pays a visit to the stranger in the hospital. The only thing he remembers of his past is seeing a name written on a headstone: that of Jim Heron—a fallen angel charged with rescuing souls from the seven deadly sins. Rapture: A Novel of the Fallen Angels
This is the newest book in J.R. Ward's Fallen Angels series. This one centers around Mathias (The F*cker) and Mels. Now, I normally love J.R. Ward, I mean who doesn't love The Black Dagger Brotherhood but I do have to admit that I have had a very hard time getting into the Fallen Angel series. I've stuck with it since the beginning but I just don't find that I bond with the characters at all. One character I do like is Jim, who all the books in the series center on and who's supposed to be this "Savior" of the human race put into some weird game between Heaven and Hell and the outcome will determine our ultimate fate. And I do dig Davina, in a weird kinda way but hands down the best character in the book series is Dog. Although I do dig those characters, I have yet to form an emotional connection to any of the others or care whether any of the souls in question go to either Heaven or Hell. I personally think that if something so major is on the line, maybe the build up to the sacrifice or the ultimate decision should be bigger somehow, I don't know but in each book, it never seems to be that much of a pay-off, so to speak, when the time comes for the soul to make the decision to be good or bad, it just kind is like eh.
Sorry went off track.
In this book, Mathias is brought back because Davina cheated, so he gets a redo. Mathias ends up with some memory loss (Hell can do that to your noodle and being hit by a car). He also meets Mels, who hit him with her car. Jim and Ad step in to care for him because the Archangels basically tell him that Mathias has a second chance and they need this win. No big surprise that Mathias's love interest is the car driver and her name is Mels. I honestly can't stand her character. She's more like a Woman/Child. I totally didn't get this chick. To me the character comes off as a total user with no life and even a bit of a doormat. She is constantly whining and getting men to do things for her. Jim saves her life twice. Her co-worker loans her his car, hers can't be fixed because of the accident but if she brings him food he'll give her his keys anytime and Mathias is going all caveman on her...uggg you my woman, don't like men looking at you! Oh and she even tries to justify why she refuses wear a seat belt in any car by blaming it on her dead father. There's a part in the book where she has an Epiphany and confronts her mom, saying she felt like she had to step into her father shoes and protect her mom (that's why she hasn't moved out) but her mom basically is an independent woman who doesn't need a man. She then lists all the things she's had to overcome since the father died, like pay her own bills (via bill pay), getting a gardener and basically raising her child. Uggggg, I mean really???? If I actually knew Mels in real life, I would have bitch slapped her and told her to get a freakin' life.
I honestly hate saying how much I was disappointed in this book because I honestly love me some J.R. Ward but when the book ended I basically closed it and said to myself, darn that was a waste of time. I'll definitely continue on with the series but more as a J.R. Ward fan then a fan of the series, if that makes sense? I honestly can't pinpoint what it is that went wrong for me in this book but I guess I was just bored through the whole thing and the characters were more annoying then anything else.
Sorry guys but I'd have to say, I'd suggest passing on this one.
2 out of 5 books :(
