Review: Toxic by Kim Karr

Book Blurb

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not...

New York Times bestselling author Kim Karr turns up the heat in a smoking hot, emotionally compelling new novel that takes you into the world of Manhattan’s elite.

In Toxic, Jeremy McQueen, a sexy, intense, sometimes brooding entrepreneur goes after what he wants—the woman he left behind years ago. Phoebe St. Claire, a put together, in control socialite-turned-CEO has been drifting through life searching for something she thought she'd never find again—the right man to share her future.

Our passion was boundless. Our lust untamed. And our desire endless. He was the only man who ever made me feel alive. Then, I betrayed him.

When he reappeared, I didn’t question it. Trust rarely survives the wrecking ball, so when he let me in back in—I didn’t hesitate.

Maybe I should have.

What began as a bid to save my family business, turned into a second chance at love. It felt so romantic. Working together, side by side, with the man I loved. My dream come true.

Nothing is as good as it seems.

We had our issues, but then again, every couple does. It wasn’t jealousy, or our too-hot sex life that I should have been worried about.

It was his darkside.

I never saw the end coming, until it slammed me in the face. The question is—did he?

Was revenge his plan all along?

****

Sometimes you have to wonder if your life is too good to be true.
Is it real or just an illusion?
Does the man lying beside you really love you like he says he does?
If the answer is yes, you’re meant to live happily ever after.
If the answer is no, you’re living my life, and nothing will ever be the same.

What you do about it—that’s up to you.

Me, I’m in too deep and there’s no getting out.

I’ll take whatever I can get for as long as I can because I know when it’s over…

I’ll never find another man like him.

Ever!

Toot's Review

In the world of high society and legacy names, there are only two classes of people, the have and the have not’s. In Kim Karr’s new novel Toxic, we have Socialite Phoebe St. Claire, who has grown up as a pampered princess until real life comes calling and she is forced to take over as CEO of her family’s company. All her friends are finding their own path and living the lives meant for them, except for Phoebe. She feels like she’s not living at all. That is, not anymore. Last time she felt alive was when she met Jeremy on a sandy beach years ago. The dashing Jeremy was a have not but that didn't stop them from having a whirlwind romance which ended very abruptly. Since then, Phoebe has kept those treasured memories under lock and key. She’s realizing that no man can live up to her memories of Jeremy except for Jeremy himself and wouldn't you know it, he just happens to be back in town and can't forget Phoebe either. He’s back, he’s successful and he wants The girl he left behind. He has big plans for the pampered princess, he has some payback to dish out and it definitely involves the lovely Phoebe.
I love me some Kim Karr but to be honest, I couldn’t quite get into this book. I tried, I really tried but I just didn't find the characters very compelling. I'm not a fan of rich kids who walk on the wild side with the “bad boy” who later comes back to show the rich kids he has made enough money to fit in with their crowd and is worthy of the girl he loves. Also the majority of the drama involved broken hearts, misunderstandings and work related issues. I was a bit bored and finished the book fairly quickly.
I would say this is more an NA/contemporary book. I did like how Kim flipped between the past and the present to bring the reader more into the story and I did like my HEA ending. Like I said, wasn't my cup of tea but give it a try and tell me what you think?
