Review: Blood Beyond Darkness (Darkness #4) by Stacey Marie Brown (YA/PNR)

Book Blurb

After months of searching, Ember and her friends have finally located the Sword of Light, the only weapon capable of destroying Queen Aneira and ending her rule. This is Ember’s destiny. Or so she thought. Now a pact to save the man she loves changes everything.

In this final installment in the Darkness Series, when the truth comes to light, Ember will learn some things are better left in the dark as her world is ripped even further apart. It is no longer a rabbit hole, but a never-ending black void full of endless lies, betrayals, and secrets.

The fight for Earth has begun, and Ember will have to make the ultimate sacrifice to save millions of innocent lives and those she loves.

But this price may be too high—even for her.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Ember has been betrayed by Josh and captured by the Queen. She is devastated. Not only is she there, so is Eli and her mother. Em fears what the Queen has in store for them. The Queen wants Ember’s powers. She has a way to transfer them to herself. She takes Ember’s powers and plans to kill her but Lars comes in to saves the day. No one is left in the Queen’s castle as a prisoner.

However not everyone can go back to Earth. Ember also learns who her real mother was and who truly killed her. Ember’s world completely falls apart. She curls up into herself and refuses everyone. Her anger is aimed at Lila and Eli. The lies and betrayals almost eat her alive. She also has guilt for not searching for Kennedy. Lorcan still has her and no one can find them.

The war is building and will soon start. Lars is gathering the Dark Fae and preparing for the fight for Earth. Ember is drug kicking and screaming back into the real world. She has to train more with no powers to fall back on except her Dark Dweller abilities. She has to forgive those she loves in order to fulfill her destiny and save the world.

She knows what she has to do and what she will ultimately lose when she does it. Her heart is torn. She wants to do the right thing but she doesn’t want the cost it will entail. The plans are made and the battle is being prepared when the time comes and the battle rages and loses some of those she loves. She also finds herself and her true destiny.

This is the fourth book in the series. It ties up the story and the lives of the characters. I loved them all. I was sad to see which ones didn’t make it to the end. It was heartbreaking to read. There were some parts, however, where Ember truly needed to get over herself. She did eventually come around. She also would give up when things seemed bleak. I wish the author would have kept her fighting instead of wasting the time questioning herself. It drove me crazy.

The relationship between her and Eli was hot and explosive. I liked them as a team. I have wanted them together since the beginning. I am sad to see this series end. It was full of Fae intrigue and getting rid of the tyrant queen. I liked how it went down with a twist, not what the reader was expecting exactly. Awesome read. I give it a 4 out of 5.
