ARC Review: I'm with Cupid (Switched at First Kiss #1) by Anna Staniszewski

Book Blurb

Marcus is a Cupid. Lena is a Reaper. Opposites attract in the exciting new Switched At First Kiss series by the acclaimed author of The Dirt Diary.

When she's dared to kiss the adorkable Marcus Torelli at a party, Lena thinks it's the perfect opportunity to cross First Kiss off her list of "Things to Accomplish Before I Turn Fourteen."

It's only when she gets sent on an assignment the next day that she realizes something went horribly wrong. That ZING she felt wasn't the thrill of her first kiss--she and Marcus have swapped powers! Lena is not your average eighth grader; she's a soul collector with a serious job to do. And Marcus turns out to be a supernatural matchmaker (like Cupid, but without the diaper).

Now logical Lena finds herself with the love touch, and sweet, sentimental Marcus has death at his fingertips. The truth is that Lena should never have taken that dare...because one little kiss has Lena and Marcus in a whole lotta trouble.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Lena is at Connie Reynolds’ party when Connie dares Marcus Torelli to kiss Lena. Marcus has a crush on Lena and Lena wants to cross her first kiss off her list. As they kiss they both feel an electric pulse go through them. Both walk away with a big smile. Marcus believes that maybe finally Lena will like him back.

However that kiss causes all sorts of problems. Lena has a secret. She is a soul collector and somehow her powers go crazy. Instead of collecting a soul, she makes the person fall in love. She is shocked and very worried about the consequences. Marcus also has a secret. He is a matchmaker and his powers aren’t working right either. It turns out they switched powers when they kissed. Their boss, Eddie, is trying to figure out what is going on. In the meantime they try not to use them. It is difficult for both of them. Lena doesn’t believe love exists and Marcus fears death. They are trying anything they can think of to make things right even facing the things they are running from.

This was an interesting YA story. Both characters bring a lot of issues to the table from the beginning. Both are dealing with unhappy home lives. Lena’s mom left her and her dad. Marcus feels like he will never measure up. They needed to come to terms with their fears in order to move on. The author created a unique situation to make them step out of their comfort zone with twist of the paranormal world.

The author did a great job of throwing relatable situations that the reader can identify with. There is bullying, parental dating, sibling rivalry, disappointments that life throws you, love, and of course death. It was all wrapped up in this neat little package. I’m glad that Lena wised up. She was so adamant that love didn’t exist that it saddened me how close-minded she was. So in the beginning I really didn’t care for her character. She changed my mind by the end. I give the book a 3 out of 5.
