Review : Highland Master (Murray Family #19) by Hannah Howell (HR)

Book Blurb

Lady Triona McKee's life is under desperate siege. The marriage she thought would answer her dreams has left her struggling alone to provide for her people, while an arrogant kinsman prepares to take her land. But one look into the cynical green eyes of her cousin's boldest knight warns Triona that even a promise of help is just as dangerous...

Betrayal taught Sir Brett Murray to make protecting others his only life. Still, the growing desire he can't help but feel for this entrancing widow makes him long to earn more than her trust. But in trying to save all she cherishes, he can't see how an honor-scarred knight can stay in her world and her heart... unless he risks everything to prove his love is now and forever always...

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Triona McKee is a window and Laird to Banuilt. She is trying hard to take care of her people after the fever took many and the men went to France to earn some coin. Most of the people left behind are women and children. The only men left behind are either too old or too young to be properly trained.

Her neighbor Sir John is not happy that she holds her late husband’s land. He wants it and her. So he is trying to force her to give up her land by marrying him. She doesn’t have enough men to protect her home if her neighbor fully attacked her home and people. She knows it is a matter of time before she will have to give in for the sake and safety of her people.

Her luck changes when her cousin unexpectedly comes for a visit. She arrives with a guard of five knights. Triona is relieved when they decide to stay and help out a bit with the training of her remaining men. They also decide to take care of her problem with her neighbor. They want to make sure her cousin, Arianna, is safe. So they take it upon themselves to get rid of Sir John one way or another.

Triona has a lot on her shoulders with the troubles that she faces as Laird, and then Sir Brett Murray arrives and offers her help. She has feelings for him that she has never experienced. Her confusion is obvious to Brett. He is attracted to her and is determined to entice her into his bed. When Sir John steps up his assaults and goes after Triona, Brett swears to protect her. His feelings grow, but he feels unworthy of her.

Sir John continues his plan, a plan that was set in place long ago. The results and the things he will do to get what he wants are shocking. Triona and her people can hardly believe the turn of events. Sacrifices are going to have to be made to ensure everyone’s safety and trust.

This story was awesome in the fact that the lead female character was extremely strong. She was laird to her own clan and worked hard to care for them. She had earned their respect and loyalty. She had a kind heart and a great spirit. A truly deadly mix for any man to encounter, they never stood a chance.

It did take me awhile to get used to the Scottish brogue that this author writes in. I have not read one of her books for a while and I have to train my brain for the phrases and works that give her stories authenticity. This story had everything love, intrigue, humor, adventure, loyalty, respect, and political plotting.

I give it a 4 out of 5
