Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Roseline
Dragomir was taken from her family and turned into a vampire by her new
husband. For years she has endured his
abuse. She decides to leave and flee to
a new life. She plans for a year and
finally makes a break for it. She finds
herself in the United States. She starts
going to school and wants to blend in with the other students. She wants a new life. She makes friends with Sadie Hughes,
determined Goth girl.
Roseline
decides to experience some aspect of like that Vladmir stole from her. She starts acting like a regular teenager
hanging out with Sadie and her brother, Will.
She also is stopped suddenly by an enticing smell. She is instantly drawn to it but has no idea
who or why. She also has to watch how
she handles the boys. They are drawn to
her because of what she is. She still
has to fly under the radar. She doesn’t
want to be found.
However
something strange is going on as she comes face to face with Gabriel
Marston. There is an instant connection
that she can’t explain. Then her fear
takes over as she pushes him away to keep him safe. There is more to the story than anyone
realizes. A bond has been formed as
family secrets are revealed. A hunter
also shows up to watch Rose as she tries to be free. Unfortunately, her friends are pulled into
her nightmare of a world.
I loved this
book. You feel for Roseline from the
very beginning. I wanted her to escape
and find a new life. She finds an
awesome friend and a couple of champions.
The connection with Gabriel was a bit surprising as was the explanation
for it. The author created some
surprises that I didn’t see coming.
I truly
liked the pairing of Gabriel and Rose.
The fact that he always came for her made him sigh-worthy. It’s sad she let her fear rule her actions
constantly. However, the reader
understands why. Her nightmare has a
name and its name is Vladmir, the vampire who stole her life.
The author
then introduces Nicolae. You know it’s
not a coincidence. He is linked to Rose’s
life but you aren’t sure how until later.
He tends to creep around giving Rose looks full of hate. So the reader knows Nicholae recognizes what
she is. It adds to Rose’s stress and the
mystery of the storyline. You know it’s
a matter of time before her secrets come out and/or Vladmir finds her. The reader just has to wait and see, guessing
how it might happen. It was a great
story and the first book in the Arotas series.
It wets the appetite for more. I
give it a 4 out of 5.
